Boat Rod - 30lb or 50lb?

I am thinking of getting a new boat rod for wreck fishing.

Is there any advantage in either the 30lb or the 50lb versions?

Jim

Re: Boat Rod - 30lb or 50lb?

OK, so the 50lb version will cope with whatever is thrown at it but the world of angling is swaying to the sport and excitment of using lighter gear.

I maybe corrected but most if not all boat fishing around the British Isles can be handled on 30lb class rods or dare I even suggest lighter.

Again, I think it's down to what you are fishing for and type of fishing.

Re: Boat Rod - 30lb or 50lb?

Go for 30lb mate,
The heaviest fishing you will need it for on a wreck are conger and 30lb class gear is fine.

Make sure you get a decent name though, as when it comes to heavy duty fishing your tackle is put under alot of stress!

Re: Boat Rod - 30lb or 50lb?

Thanks Marty and Paul,

I was just concerned that I might regret getting a 30lb when that bigun gets on and pulls a bit too hard.

Re: Boat Rod - 30lb or 50lb?

Hi Paul,
I'll keep this very simple.
I use a 12lb Ugly Stik for skerries work.Has a super fine tip and great bite detection Coupled with a 6500 size multi.
Diawa 2-8oz Powerlift z uptide and Diawa sl30sh for pollocking.(wicked combi)
Ugly Stik 50lb class for big wreck Conger (not that iver caught a big one yet but its good to be prepared just in case) with a Shimano TDL25.
Beach work is undertaken with a Cono-flex Enigma south with 6500abu.

Its probably best to go for the 30lb class though cos the 50lb is a bit stiff.
Hope you get what you want ...
cheers
Nigel.

I bet you had a good fight as well mate, which would have been greatly reduced if you were using 50lb gear!?

I agree with Paul in as much as keeping the quality there.
