Question Reel For Braid ???

Hi guys first time poster,I am looking to give braid a try and need some advice as to suitable reels
At the moment I use an ABU 7500C3 for fishing with mono, but I would like to use something smaller and lighter for braid fishing.
I have been told by various people that a lever drag is essential so what do you reckon?
I should also point out that I don't go boat fishing more than 10 times a year,so I don't really want to spend too much .
Suggestions please

Re: Reel For Braid ???

Hi,

Your reel is ideal for braid. As a suggestion, why not purchase another spool and fill it with braid and swap over spools as and when.

I have a 7500 and 7000C3 with two spare spools filled with braid which I alternate between uptide and downtide fishing.

Cheers

I think the smallest and possibly the only sea multiplier with lever drag and level wind is the Shimano Charter Special at around £80; it is highly rated

see here http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshim...erspecial.html

I'd also be interested to know of any other.

Re: Reel For Braid ???

Bigfish, Welcome to a great forum.

I fish from my own boat in south devon, I use braid and mono depending on tide and species sought. You do not need lever drag. I have 2 fixed spool reels with braid, ever heard of 1 of them fitted with lever drag?

My multipliers go from tiny penn 9's up to a monster penn senator 114h 50lb outfit. None have a lever drag. The one really big difference that doesn't get spoken about with braid is ........don't give it any slack at any time. it will tangle and you cannot untangle braid. Always keep it tight between everything.

You have just joined a forum with some very experienced fishermen on board, hope you can keep the signature 'Bigfish' well used! Look forward to your posts.

Best regards, Jules

Re: Reel For Braid ???

You can use braid fishing line with ANY reel mult /fixed spool , it does not matter

With braid the main thing to remember is to set you drag until you get used to it as there is no give with braid which makes it great for fishing ( you feel everything that is going on down below )

The lever drag thing is more of a personnel rect.. as most people including me prefer to use you thumb on a level than mess about with a star clutch when playing a fish

Braid is slightly more abrasive on your reel - but I have two Shimano Charter Specials TDL 15 and have been using braid for going on 10 years and have had no problems ( kiss of death now)

All braid line is --- Fishing Line and was desgined to fish with hence no need for a special reel

Hope above makes some sense as its been along day

ANy Question just type and post we are all learning every day

Re: Reel For Braid ???

Would swear but not allowed. Of course your abu is up to it.

Buy braid from Richard (big boss)on this forum. Its excellent and very cheap. Opens up a new level of fishing.

Cheers, Jules
