| Blandford SAC - Weymouth 10th April With the sound of the alarm at 0530 I was up, washed, shaved and hand my breakfast by 0600. It was then out to pack the car and up to Richards to pick him up at 0630 for our trip to Weymouth. After calling into a packed Weymouth Angling Centre it was round to the car park to meet up with the rest of the Blandford SAC that included Darrel, Imran, (Mule) and AndyG for our regular monthly charter. Our boat this month was Paul Whittal’s Offshore Rebel. This trip was scheduled for Turbot/Plaice, but due to the lack of the target fish the skipper suggested that we go wrecking instead. This was agreed by all (The skipper knows best) and at 0730 along with the usual armada of Weymouth angling boats we chugged out to our first mark of the day where we spent an hour stocking up on live Sand Eels. This proved to be quite an event and was enjoyed by all on board. With a live tank full of these slimy little characters, we then set off on our two - hour journey for the first wreck of the day where we started the first of our drifts. “Fish on skip” was then heard continually through out the morning. Every drift proved fatal to at least one of these fighting fish, on more than one occasion we had four or five on the drift, I personally had two fish on one drift alone. One of the highlights of this trip was the use of live Sand Eels. It made the fishing more enjoyable, in the sense that more fish were lost than those taken. The excitement on board had to be seen to be believed, “fish on skip” was followed by “fish off skip” all morning, yet everyone was concentrating on enticing the fish to the bait. In our morning session we had a total of fifty - two Pollock to 14lbs. I personally had nine, the heaviest just over 11lbs. Whilst fishing for our Eels we also had a bucket of Herring. Shortly after lunch and a most welcome cup of tea, the Skipper suggested that as we had a sufficient number of Pollock we return to Weymouth and have a couple oh hours trying for Turbot, a vote was taken and by 6 to 4 we decided to head back. Need I say, all of us blanked. I must add that this trip was one of the most enjoyable trips that I have ever had. The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold, the sea was flat calm, and there was just a hint of a breeze. The company was great and combined with an excellent skipper who had the kettle on all day long, it couldn’t have been bettered. No doubt the others will be along soon to add to this account.
