Getting right naffed off !

With a cracking weekend just gone with the winds I had a trip planned on our boat out of Exmouth tomorrow or Thursday - got the gear ready and a few different wrecks to try for a few pollack - not after loads just two or three each for the pot and most of all to convince my wife and old dear that we can catch fish !!!!!

Checked out the weather all weekend and right now and just for a change the forecast looks like ruining yet again -getting totally fed up with trying to get afloat and have a fun day out - maybe the week after next will be calm and a chance to get out ......................

Drew and Mark - if you got out yesterday I hope you had a great day lads and Darrel hard luck on your illness mate - just typical when the weather is half decent.

Re: Getting right naffed off !

We got out yesterday but when the skipper says at 2.45 "shall we call it a day" you know its been bad!!

the fishing was as good as the shores only a few Pollock and pout. None of the Pollock were over the 8lb mark.

Re: Getting right naffed off !

Hi all,

The title says it all.

We set off at 0645 in cold but ideal conditions and arrived at our mark 2 hours later.

Wreck netted.

Without going through the days journey in detail other than saying the wrecks that we visited were netted and produced 8 fish between 9 of us.

As TJ stated at 2.45 the skipper suggested that enough was enough and that we should return home.

My own thoughts on the matter are: Could we have travelled further and found un-netted wrecks? We fished within site of land all day, on most occasions when we wreck fish from Dartmouth we are out of site of land.

Were we short of fuel?

On Friday evening when I phoned the skipper he informed me that we had to leave on the dot as he had to return early to pick up fuel for the following day.

There were no other charter boats within site of us all day long, we would normally see a few other boats around the wrecks.

The skipper wasn't his usual self.

Difficult one to explain but there are times when you "Just know" things are not quite right. The crewman was missing, not normal on this boat. He spent lots of time apologising, never before has he done this.

I might be 100% wrong, I have blanked on many occasions but have never been out at this time of the year on an offshore Pollacking trip with so many people blanking.

I'm not making excuses BUT???????? this trip was worse than any I have ever been on before.

Sorry TJ & Just Mark, maybe we can try again.

Regards

Drew

Re: Getting right naffed off !

Flypin heck and theres me moaning about getting out - sorry to hear you had such a poor day.

Surely if you are travelling out 2 hours you must have covered 30 miles or maybe 20 miles - wot speed do the cats plod along at - 12 knots - so maybe 20 miles. Where would you normally head put of Dartmouth then because land is pretty clear all round ?

Im assuming you were on the ' usual ' boat Drew and you are right thats not his set up is it - sounds to me like a poor days fishing and generally cutting costs with no crewman and little fuel - whats your conclusion - do think skippers are getting fed up with the netters ? Would it make a difference if you had gone out 30 miles would that avoid the netters ?

Sorry to hear it was a poor day but like we all say - we go out each trip in hope of those cracking days and soon the better weather will be here and if nothing else the fun of makeral on light gear .............

Just a thought but would there be less netts on the weekdays rather than weekends ?

Re: Getting right naffed off !

Hi all,

Food for thought, Ian Goff "Shande" had over 40 fish to 15lbs.??? He was out much further than we were.

Where were the other charter boats fishing?

We were travelling much slower than usual both there and back???? The cats normally cruise at 16 - 18 knts.

"With a party of 10 anglers I'll sail to the mid-Channel wrecks, up to 20 miles, for £50 per person and if we go further than 20 miles, I charge £50 per person."

"With a minimum of 8 individual anglers I'll fish the mid-Channel wrecks and reefs up to 20 miles for £50 each and I add a small surcharge of around £5 per person, if we fish more than 20 miles away from our home Port."

Due to our early return we were charged £45, there is no way that we were 20 miles off shore.

Regards

Drew

Re: Getting right naffed off !

All points to money saving to me Drew - a bit of a stitch up on the costs as well - if you are usually 20 miles out I take it you dont see land so much - taking 2 hours to get there sounds like you must have been going well slow as well.

Any idea how far Shande went out - does it make a difference for the netts if you go say 30 miles rather than 20 - I take it the netters dont go out that far if they are collecting multiple gear on various wrecks ?

Re: Getting right naffed off !

an old sea dog informed me, that you start to lose sight of the shore at 14 miles because of the curvature of the earth. He was a naval man.

I said (in my micheal caine voice) " not alot of people know that!
