Re: Deadly method for pollock from a boat

Long ,long time ago before the days of sidewinders, shads, jellyworms and
red gills, we fished with rag worm.

Rig was and still is a "flying collar", boom off main line, trace 10 to 14 foot long, (8.4 to 4.5 metres) with a fine wire hook attached. Rag just nicked through the head dropped over the wreck and bingo fish ON.

Super rig the flying collar john, i use same rig but the 2 hook version few feet apart, as well as straight rag we use frozen sandeels as well. But there is a better one, seems to get the bigger fish. But the rig mentioned catches a lot of fish and i mean alot. One of the best the flying collar. Good man john. John what champs did you win mate in 2005.

Re: Deadly method for pollock from a boat

John bar skate, spurdog fishing and lobster pots there is no boat pollock fishing at this time of year infact its dead at present, and if there is anyone out in a boat you need help fast. Boat fishing were i live doesnt start till april-maytime then it kicks off and 80% off our boat fishing is for pollock, trawlers cleaned it etc, we do get ray, place, dogs wrasse, spurdog in summertime. Good luck for 2moro.

"I want you guys to start this post if thats ok as i learn too. Then i will give mine"

Hi all,

Stud, what are you on about?

With all due respect "Let me into all your secrets and when I have them all, I might let you into mine".

I have just been reading through your posts and I'm very impressed with what you have written so far. You must be a very experienced angler. I have known and fished with John for a number of years now and would put him in the class as one of the best Sea Anglers on this site.

In the early days of this forum we used to have regular charter fishing meetings with a Forum Champion being crowned at the end of the year. Unfortunately these outings no longer take place, it appears that the members now no longer wish to commit themselves to paying out £50 for a 12 hour fishing trip.

Getting back to your question, what is your secret method for catching Pollock.

John, the Dartmouth/Exmouth boats have been Pollock fishing for the past two months!!!

Regards

Drew

Re: Deadly method for pollock from a boat

Hi drew, youve lost me, i did say that johns tip the flying collar was one of the best rigs for pollock, when i said then ill give mine i didnt mean mine is the best but does catch the bigger pollock. Your lucky to have boats going out this time of year, in northern ireland 90% of boats are taken out of the water in end of october, anyway drew i like john fish with the best, anglers who have fished at world champ level and its only a bit of fun and its information that some dont know, but like you and i we do know abit not everything but enough. Right guys 4get and ill tell you mine for now. How would you catch pollock off a boat. Drew it would take a life time for me to give you all information. Cod 2moro john hope you catch a big one mate.

Re: Deadly method for pollock from a boat

I would use considerably different tactics for match fishing and pleasure fishing but lure colours would remain the same, as I don't do match fishing anymore I have lots of left over rigs, it is no good me trying to explain how they look or work when I work out how to get photos from my phone to PC I will put them on here. I would however be very interested to know how they are caught in Northern Ireland.
