Need advice

One or two outboards?

Have been told two 40's dont equal 80??? Better off with one big plus aux.

So please give me your views guys.

Re: Need advice

Don't know about the technical side but I would be far happier with 2 40's. If you have a problem with one, then a single 40 is going to get you back far quicker than an aux. Guess it also depends how much space you have at the transom.

Cheers, Jules

Re: Need advice

2X40 equal the same in HP as an 80 but will use more fuel than the 80 due to frictional losses. Also the 80 will be lighter. Remember also for twin instalations ideally one should have a counter rotating prop to ballance the boat.

If you go this route have separate fuel tanks and batteries with a crossover switch on each system. If you only have one fuel tank and the fuel gets contaminated neither engine will work.

Try also to pick an engine size which will get the boat up on the plane on one engine, from a safety point you could run out of fuel trying to get home on one engine at displcement speed.

Re: Need advice

Thanks for the welcome, Sorry if my post was too technical, I repair boats and engines for a living, please excuse me if I get carried away.

Been a lurker for a while and think you have a great site, when I read this I thought I should stick my nose in. Expensive if you make an uninformed choice.

Bit about me by way of introduction. I live in North Wales but was born a Manc, married and a 16 year old son. All the family enjoy fishing and boating so I guess I am lucky. Owned a boat for 34 years, present one is a Pilothouse 620 with 90hp Merc 4 stroke and 6hp kicker. (not a fan of twins) I fish within 40 miles of home which is on the Menai Straits.

Re: Need advice

John and Audi,

Any chance of putting up some pics of your boat? Many years ago I was a boat builder and would love to see the stage you are at.

ChrisP sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

Cheers, Jules.
