Shockleader

I must ask why do people use shockleader when not casting from the boat? I am quite interested in peoples opions on this.

hi m8, i recon
usually because they're useing braid and need a leader, not as a shock leader but as a rubbing trace to take any damage from the sea bed or wreck.
also if snagged it creates a weak point that will break saveing the loss of the expensive braid
stronger or weaker than the main line makes little difference as usually will break on the knot

That seems reasonable regaurding braid, but what about those who use nylon as a main line. As we know braid can be very unforgiving.

if they are fishing down tide from a boat there is little point in useing a shockleader but a rubbing trace maybe useful if over rough ground.
either that or they were useing their beach reels from a boat for light fishing & didn't bother removeing the shockleader?
