Re: braid or mono

Hi Delboy,

I uptide from Bradwell, in Essex, and over the years having tried both lines I have come to the conclusion that mono is better.

Cheers

Re: braid or mono

It's not so straight forward as “is it better or not”.
Braid has qualities that mono doesn't and visa versa.
With braid your bite detection and contact is spot on. With mono all that lovely elasticity helps you land fish that would otherwise pull the hook and help leads stay imbedded that would otherwise get pulled.
For uptiding with braid you will need a softer actioned rod, firstly so that the tip gives nicely against the tide, secondly to stop those hooks pulling on the cod. Try working with a mono top shot of different lengths until you have the sensitivity you want with the elasticity you require.

Re: braid or mono

I've started using braid for the first time this year. Conclusion? As RobL said not an easy "one is best".

I have really enjoyed using braid and have 3 reels now spooled up with it. If you regularly get tangles then don't touch it. You will discover the secrets of intergalactic flight before you ever untangle braid.......no I'm not joking.

The feel of the fish on braid is fantastic. You will lose a few more fish but you will also hook up with a few more fish to start with.

Using a smaller diameter line means you cast further, but being a lot softer than mono you have to remember to always keep any braid tight, any loose braid will tangle on itself.

Give it a try, some things you gotta do for yourself.

Best of luck, Jules

Re: braid or mono

If you can get it try PowerPro Braid. To me it is the best available. It has a round cross section similar to mono so it does not bed down when under tension like the flat braids and is very supple unlike the coated braids. It is also very abrasion resistant, I have had the same braid on a reel for 3 easons now and it is still going strong. I use a rod length and a half of a slightly lower BS mono as a shock absorber to try and minimise hook pulls especially when landing a fish. This also has the benfit of breaking befoe the braid if I find the plug, and there is no need for complicated knots to attatch the end tackle.

Re: braid or mono

It would not be an advantage to use your braid Del.

I believe it's better to use mono for uptiding

The reason is that the drag on the arc of the line helps to set the lead - thinner line less drag more line out etc etc.
