Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

Hi guys and gals can you help???

I am booked to go on my first boat fishing trip on the varne in the english channel but i know 0% about boat fishing. I am a bech angler so only know whats needed so I need to swat up so i have a basic understanding of terms and ways to fish. Also need some help with the age old remedy of trying to find a way of not spewing my guts up whist im out there!!!

I would like to know what these styles are please

1:- Drifting 2 :- jigging 3:- perking 4 uptiding and downtiding. 5:- Wrecking

Apparently some of these need bait and others not

We will be fishing for Cod so your opinions would be appreciated. And whats the best way to not puke? Is there anything i can do to lessen the chance or is it just tough $*&t?

Anymore info that you think would be revelent will also be noted guys

Many thanks

Tight Lines

Joe

Re: Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

You can get anti-seasickness pills, some need to be taken 12 hrs before the trip.
Some say that ginger snaps help?
I suggest you visit a phrmacist before hand and get their advice.
RE tackle, do you have to supply your own? Some charter skippers supply or you can hire for a small fee, maybe pay extra for lost leads/pirks.
Its more hands on than beach fishing, and on that point, don't go of the rod, sods law is that the moment you rest it against the gunwals, a big fish snaps it up.

Best way of avoiding sea sickness is to sit under a tree.
On a more serious note from which port will you be going from. English Channel is a big place.

Re: Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

I have seen many anglers over the years taking various sea sick pills only to throw them up again, one type works better than most (Stugeron Sp) but if you think you are going to be ill on the boat chances are you will be, just make sure you eat plenty to make sure there is plenty to come back up apparently Oranges taste the same going down as coming up, crisps can be a bit awrkward some people say keeping your blood sugar up helps eg boiled sweets etc, if you are in sight of land keep your eye fixed on it which helps the inner ear know where it is in the world. Termanoligy, Drifting can be drifting a bait over a bank or most likley drifting a lure over a wreck, Jigging and Perking may be the same thing perks required with bait, uptiding is to cast a bait up or accross the tide fish should hook themselfs as the weight is broken off the bottom and moves off downtide. Downtide is simply to plonk a bait over the side of the boat and weight for the lead to hit the bottom. Wrecking can be either drifting or downtiding. Your skipper is the best person to help you out here as he knows his intentions for the day. Unfortunateley I have never fished Dover so could not possibly tell you of the type of fishing you are likley to encounter.

Re: Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

If you get on the boat & the engine isn't running - don't sit at the back!!!
A lungfull of diesel fumes will get you chundering in port if your susceptable.
We always used to have a good fry up before leaving - then if you are sick at least there is something to bring up.
If your impervious to the mal-de-mare, pop a whole squid in your mouth leave the tentacles dangling outside you lips & make wibble noises at the poor peeps who are a bit green.
As KKK said ask the skipper & do exactly what he tells you - never needed to priovide bait when hiring rods :)

Re: Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

Hi Joe,

First and foremost, How do you know that you are going to be sick????

Forget about sea sickness and think about how much you are going to enjoy yourself

It is impossible to describe how to fish on a boat as everyone has there own opinion, might I suggest that you inform the skipper that this is your first time on a charter and take it from there.

From what you have told us, i.e. going for Cod, you will either be drifting rough ground or drifting a wreck. One way or another the skipper is your best bet. He will supply the tackle for the occasion, will demonstrate what you must do, and lo and behold you will have a Cod on your line. One thing to remember is that your rod is the instrument for bringing your fish to the boat and NOT your reel.

Have a great day out and remember to let us know how you got on.

Regards

Drew

Re: Bluesbro is going on his first boat trip. HELP!!!!

Hi Guys cheers for all the info, i shall try not to worry about the whole sea sickness thing, it`s just that my old man tried it and was sick as a parrot and said never again so i just wanted some ideas to try and minimise the chances.

I not entirly sure what boat im out on paul as my mate has booked it up for us, all i know is that she is licenced for 10 people and is supposed to be quite a fast boat if that helps.

Regards

Joe
