| I'm looking to buy a basic 'waterproof' hand held GPS that will also accept 12v battery power. Please give me your recommendations on which of the "good value" ones I should be looking at - for ease of use and readability. __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water " |

Thanks for your experienced advice on navigating at sea. I'm used to charts and navigating with a sextant - I didn't know the OS now produced 'Sea Maps'. Do they have the roads to the wrecks shown? I think using a log, tidal current calcs, hand bearing compass, together with variation and any deviation ; horizontal and vertical sextant angles, doubling the angle on the bow etc etc and plotting the lot on a 16 ft boat - I'd rather be fishing and using a GPS ! I look forward to your further enlightening comments Cheers __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water " |

| Re: Hand held GPS - Which? Hi Richard, Thanks for your response. Yes. it's for the new boat. I believe the existing owner has found a working fish-finder but that's all it does. My favourite in the past used to be a hand held Garmin which I could use at the helm. Ages ago it was recognised that Garmin was superior to Megallen purely because of after sales back-up and they were approx same price. I guess I'll be spending around £100 - don't think I need the ones with coloured charts etc - I think I'd still use paper charts because when all the electrics fail I can still get home safely. But; I've been out of touch so I'm open to advice , perhaps I ought to consider fish finder/Gps - I'd need to take it home to stop it walking! Your suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Keep off the 'Ganga' mate! I asked the question on the boat section of a fishing forum - of course I might have been hiking the hills of Wales if I'd been sharing your 'spliff'. Lets stick to the beer Cheers __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water " |
