Evening All, I'm hoping to collect an Alaska 500 next week. What size outboard should I buy as the auxiliary safety motor? __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water "

Re: What size 'back up' outboard? Not to sure but would go for something round 9hp I have a 6hp for my sea hog hunter on a aux bracket only used it in anger once and itwas up to the job. May be teaching granma to suck eggs here but if you need to use aux engine lock it from turning and use the main engine to steer its a lot more controlable. Cogratulations on new boat they'r from the seahog stable so should be a good boat.

Re: What size 'back up' outboard? Hi Sanctuary, Thanks for info and useful tip. I've got a lot to learn about using small boat power boats! It's not a new boat - just new to me. I think it's out of the Shetland stable 1991/92. I took onboard the comments re a Seajeep and was going that way then Alaskas was recommended and used by local guys. 'Codfather' put me in touch with a seller who had an Alaska. and the price etc seems right. Only really know after a few months use. I think I'm a bit of a tradionalist and like to see a pointy bit at the front __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water "

Re: What size ' back up ' outboard ? Hey Fluffy, Keep a diary mate. It'll come in handy for me as I will be in the market for a set of water wheels. I read the other thread, glad you've located one. Take a piccy and post, would be interested to see it. __________________ Come on you Irons

Re: What size ' back up ' outboard ? Hi Sanctuary, I think Alaska 500 were manufactured by 'Shetland' until 1992/3??. After that manufactured by 'Seahog' . Soooo - Very similar or even the same. But the 'shetlands' are better __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water "

Re: What size ' back up ' outboard ? hi Fluff I have a 3 1/2 hp Tohatsu on my shetland. Not only does it start 1st time everytime and use virtually no fuel, on small tides when the water over the sandbanks I usually fish is shallow I use it as main engine because it causes much less disturbance. Doesn't go fast but will push me along all day at about 5 knots. I think it was about 300 squids but I think you do need a brand new backup, especially if your main engine is second hand. Best of luck with the alaska. __________________ born to fish....forced to work

Re: What size ' back up ' outboard ? Hi Jules, Thanks - a really good safety tip to buy a new one as a back up - think I will. I'd better buy a Japenese one as they seem the most reliable - shame nearly all the seagulls are dead Anybody got suggestions for an outboard "good deal" ? cheers __________________ * <0((fluff))< " 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water "
