Trolling for bass?

Just bought a boat in Plymouth and have two rod holders on the stern and two rod holders on each beam. Went out and used a light spinning rod fixed onto the stern holder with a dexter wedge attached onto a 20ld line trailing about 30 feet behiond the boat as I went out to Cawsand at about 4 knots. This was very much a shot to nothing but was rewarded with a 2 pound Pollock striking after about an hour.

I've seen other boats out with rigs extended which I assume is for bass, what sort of rods do you need to use and what bait? I'm assuming it is some sort of lure but how do you keep it at any sort of depth; do you indeed need to do that?

Lots of questions, does anyone have any advice, as I'd be very grateful.
