| Smoothound Fishing Bristol Channel - Lady Helen Penarth Well the morning had come and at 4.30am my alarm bell went and with on eye open I got myself sorted and into the car to head down to Penarth and to fishing aboard Lady Helen with the lads Made good time down there and after a little wait for Andy breakfast to be served and eaten we were through the gates and heading down to the Nash area to see if we could get into some rays and early smoothounds Thankfully the weather was lovely and we had our anchor set in the first mark to see if there were and rays about after a few minutes we soon found that the dogfish were about in vast numbers today and the main challenge would e getting our baits past them. Method for the day was uptiding 8oz grip leads fishing a 3 foot mono of about 40 lb on pennel rig of 5/0 Bait for the day was whole squid After a bit of time the rays were not play we pushed out into the channel as now the tide was starting to drop. Once anchored up out went our squid baits and we were all set to see if we could get a smoothound or two. John was soon leaning into what looked a good fish so with this out came the camera to see if I could video it **** WARNING - video contains adult language and body functions **** So with a nice smoothound aboard and our spirits lifted we all got our head into the fishing Suddenly my rod was bent round and with a quick grab it and was leaning into a fish **** WARNING - video contains adult language and body functions **** A bit puffed out but very happy we continued to fish with a small break for some cracking hot sausage baps and a mug of tea. Now the tide was dropping quite well the time to try my secret bait to come out and have a go was on me. With a bit a banter from Mike and the others down it went and bugger me with in two minute the rod tip was rattling and up came a small conger !! Boy did I laugh and the expression on Mikes face was a picture. Just goes to show you that if you don’t try you down know. With a continues stream of doggies were all kept busy ( thank god were weren’t using crab !!! ) but no more smoothounds until lady luck kissed me again and I was into a fish again and boy do they go well in slack water **** WARNING - video contains adult language and body functions **** After this the tide started to pick up again so it was time to set back in shore and have a go at the rays again. We were soon settled on our new mark and the dog fish were there in there number so it was hard going but I did mange to get a Blonde Ray of about 10lb out which I was more than happy with All in all a cracking day yet again aboard the Lady Helen topped off with banter and sausage baps . | Re: Smoothound Fishing Bristol Channel Was a class day plenty of banter...would like to say good company too....but you can all sod off!!! only jesting. great to get out in calm conditions and get the rods bending even if they were under the strain from the plague of doggies that followed us around all day. still recon you need an outrigger and great analogy of getting your fingers in the congers gills mike!!! may have to get some practice in before the next trip. don't forget the carrots on the next trip. john __________________ Catch and Release fishing is a lot like a game of golf.
