Re: Predator 160 info please

Hi David, is that the boat made in the channel islands? If it is I do know a bit about it as a mate has one...not seen him for a month or so and next fishing club meeting a couple of weeks away. I'll see him then and get a 1st hand report for you. Last time I saw him he'd just taken delivery of his new boat and was over the moon about it. But getting old and can't remember exactly what he said it was!!!
Cheers jules.

Re: Predator 160 info please

Hi David,
A mate locally had one for a while and was perfectly happy with it. I've seen structural problems with one on a forum that was dealt with satisfactorily by the company (Douglas Marine IIRC?). Seakeeping, weight, structural integrity and quality of finish all seem to be acceptable. There's an extended version now, the 165, that was tested in the recent copy of BFM. Only comment I'd make on that was that on the test they were chucking it around and in the pictures it has a serious angle of heel in a hard corner, you can see the passenger hanging on for grim death.
IMO, the modern generation of fast-fishers pretty well all make the grade. I'd say the Predator, Raider, Warrior, Samurai, Endeavour and various Seahogs are all damn good boats. I'd tend to class the Orkney 520 as maybe a little slow and pricey but that's my speed bias coming through. There's a few newer or more fringe models around at the moment as well, the Atlantic, the Pilot 4 and the Bonwitco.
It is Southampton Boat Show soon, if you can I'd get down there and talk to the manufacturers direct, have a look at the boats, maybe book a test ride (Warrior will have a 165 and a Pro Angler on the water there) even if you plan on buying second-hand.

Steve
