warrior 165

I`m looking around at various models of the warrior 165. I hope to buy one shortly and there are a few on the `boats and Outboards` site. The price varies from about 8k to 12k depending on whats fitted but mainly it seems on the engine type and size.

Can anyone advise me if there is much of a difference between using a 50hp and 60hp (4 stroke) a 75hp ((E tec). The cheapest i`ve seen so far (£7,995) has a 90hp 4 stroke. Would you say this is expensive to run compared to the others? I wont even consider a 2 stroke because of the running costs.

I would be very grateful for some advise. I`ll be looking to spend about 10k and i`ll be using it out of Penarth in the very strong currents of the Bristol Channel.

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: warrior 165

I know Mike. Lovely boat but I dont really want a boat with a cabin any more. I`ve got one already and it takes up valuable fishing space. Plus I`m looking for a more economical 4 stroke with a bit of umph.

You must be on commission or something lol.

Hi,
If you fish solo, or very lightly loaded, the 50hp will be OK but you'll be looking at maybe 23-24 knots flat out? The 60hp will cruise at those speeds and top out nearer 26-28 knots, it'll be more economical to run than the smaller engine as well. Personally, I like the speed of the Warrior and I'd not want an under-powered rig. My 75hp etec is pretty good on fuel for a 2 stroke, matches my mate's Mariner 60hp 4 stroke. I think fuel economy is an over-rated worry though. I got 4mpg from a 60hp 2 stroke bigfoot, the same make of 4 stroke gave a friend 5mpg, my e-tec does 5mpg (I'm not gentle with it, either) and the best figures I've seen from anyone with a 165 are about 7mpg. Given that you can expect to pay at least £1K less for a boat fitted with an older 2 stroke, it actually might work out better value unless you do huge mileages.
It is said that the 60hp 4 strokes can struggle to get a heavily loaded 165 onto the plane, with the Suzuki being the best of them. The 165 is a touch light at the bows and will porpoise at speed, a habit not helped by fitting the (slightly) heavier 4 strokes. A 90hp motor may well weigh a good bit more, depends on whether it is a 'tuned' 60hp or a bigger block. If so, you'd want trim tabs and also should be aware that your insurance company might not be happy that the engine exceeds the design limit of 80hp. Be wary of that one.
For fittings, I'd hope to find a boat with the bait rail and plenty of rod holders. Check the underfloor is dry (drain plug in the front of the bilge recess) and on a trailered boat check carefully for fine hull cracks especially forward of the rollers. You do pay a premium for a Warrior compared with other boats in the class but they hold their value well, are damn competent and well finished.

Steve

p.s pm me if you want any more info.

Re: warrior 165

We had a warrior 165 with a 60 horse mecrury and that was plenty mate - we were cruising along at 30knots max on a flat day which is great but quite hard on the body !! Comfortably goes at 22 knots and that more than enough for the Bristol Channel in my opinion.

I simply wouldnt bother going any higher than a 60 myself but then thats just a personal choice.

Cheers
