| Portland Harbour Help Please We have just spent four hours mackerelling around Portland Harbour and only caught five fish, wife 2, son 3 and me 0  I know that there are not many mack around this year so I want to try for other species. We don't have a sounder or GPS so please can someone suggest some marks and techniques to help us out? Thank you Jon __________________ Portland Jon Anyone can catch 'em when they are there. | Re: Portland Harbour Help Please Try drifting over the Hood with baited feathers. Rag or squid strips. Be warned you may well loose tackle as it is VERY snaggy! The other is drifting through the entrance for Bass, sandeel, small joey mackerel (live is best) on a float. Suggest you get the Admiral Chart for Portland as it shows loads of good marks to try. | Re: Portland Harbour Help Please Hi, used to launch my boat from Portland a couple years ago, always caught some good fish. The other reply said over the Hood...good mark, always macks there plus some very good wrasse, but tackle graveyard. the entrance can produce but usually boats already there. Why do you not leave the harbour? There are so many really productive marks very close. My boat is only 18ft but we used to go out to the shambles and Adamant banks without any problems.....but be careful where on the shambles you go. also some very good black bream marks quite close by. Not putting them up here but if you want some pointers outside the harbour PM me. Cheers and good hunting, jules. __________________ born to fish....forced to work |

| Re: Portland Harbour Help Please I was working in the harbour a couple of months ago and it was alive with mackerel, they must have moved on or all been caught I had some decent bass drifting the hood with shads and others fishing along the walls of the old Clearance diving building (Binclieves) A decent area for Bream is the old SBS building on the middle breakwater,i also saw some big wrasse whilst diving the area out and to the right from the Hood,it was a very rocky bottom. Good luck. __________________ Come on you HULL! |
