Re: WARNING>>>> WAFI ALERT around the iow Having spent a couple of weeks watching small boat owners launching from the beach in Devon where I was on holiday I'm still baffled why it is that anyone, whether they are in a yacht, fishing boat or speed boat, is llowed to just go out into the sea without having to prove they have any competence or common sense. The speeds some of the boats were coming back into the beach just yards from people swimming had to be seen to be believed. I want to buy myself a boat at some point probably just as a pleasure boat but possibly to use for fishing as well but before buying it I will get on some training courses as I don't know the first thing about navigation or what various buoys mean but what worries me is that when I get out there the majority of those around me won't know or even care about such things.

Re: WARNING>>>> WAFI ALERT around the iow I own my own power boat (which I also fish from) , I have my RYA Advanced powerboat licence + VHF, so I would say im experienced ...... If I had a pound for every time I have seen an idiot new to boating run his prop aground by calshot spit I would be very rich..... Also get very when you get shouts from young lads in a dingy's that have been pulled out by the tide asking for a toe back in.....I think they should be fined !!!!!!

Re: WARNING>>>> WAFI ALERT around the iow We were in Amroth in August. The Brummy navy must have been in town (thought they did sound like they were from Swansea). There was a strong offshore wind and a weak tide. Now anyone with a brain cell would know that putting three small kids in a rubber dinghy and letting go probably isn't a good idea. Despite this I lost count of the number of panicking dads swimming out to retreive their kids 100 yards out. Course the other thing they'd forgotten is that there is steep ground up wind so the further out they got, the faster they went. A couple of times I was on the verge of dialling 999 as a swimmer looked like he was about to loose strength. Course I wasn't getting in there too, nope sounds harsh but I am not that stong a swimmer and would end up knackered too. Also saw the power boat brigade driving up and down the beach at speed. Now, fair enough , they were a couple of hundred yards out so they weren't a hazard to swimmers or anglers. What did make my blood boil slightly was when one ran out of petrol, got on his mobile and called his mate. All well and good but I just cannot beleive that anyone would put themselves at such risk. It was obvious he had inaqequate fuel and no radio. Phones are good but I didn't see that many masts out to see. I think it is difficult to address his problem. If we charge people to be rescued we may encourage people to leave it too late when they need help. Would we also start charging drunken people who fall over or the absolute idiots who get stuck on mountain tops in trainers and shell suits? Problem I think is the usual one these days, no bl@@dy respect. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk

Re: WARNING>>>> WAFI ALERT around the iow As a few of you know I now live in Spain. Over here everyone even jetski owners have to have a passed a test before they are allowed on the water. They also have to have insurance. You can not launch a boat or any water craft from any slipway or marina without insurance. The Guarda Civil regularly do spot checks on boats. If you do not have a license and or insurance. You are fined instantly and they can and often do impound your boat. I know of people that have had their boats confiscated. However despite having these safeguards in place 80% of Spanish boat owners are just as stupid and idiotic as the same 80% of British boat owners.
