| Fishing with Shads Hi GUys need some help!! I have invested in a range of storm shads and eels mostly weighted with a leadhead and all looking absolutely perfect for the bass and pollack off the Gower coast. However I am not sure how to get the best from them. I have read that to troll lures you should always go WITH the tide as the lures dont look natural any other way... unfortunately our tides are so strong we couldnt stick below 3knots which I believe is too fast??? so then theres drifting them i guess? we were drifting between 0.7 and 2knots - is this suitable. Should these shads be fished just as they are or on some sort of flying collar rig?????? Most of the marks we fish are between 15-35ft over reef/rough ground. | Re: Fishing with Shads Iv only ever used them on the drift on a flying collar rig, work very well for pollack and ling and cod aswel! But personally never fished water that shallow so think the tactics may be different __________________ New site! sea fishing devon |

| Re: Fishing with Shads Hi, In those sort of depths on the East Coast of Scotland, the successful tactic with leadheads seems to be to drift and cast away from the boat and retrieve using light spinning rods. For trolling, if you are going with a 3 knot tide then I don't think speed over ground will matter much?? So long as you have a knot or so of extra speed in the water, the lures will work right and from a swimming fishes point of view they'll only be doing 1 knot. I guess it depends on whether the bass or pollack are hunting with the tide or trying to ambush from behind shelter. Steve |

| Re: Fishing with Shads Hi, If you want to try out your shads, go to the 3 mile bank. Set them up as a paternoster rig with snoods about 24"-36" long. Drift the flood for best results. Good Luck. |

| Re: Fishing with Shads As far as depth is concerned, on an 11.6 tide you will have about 85 feet below you. Don't worry about the speed of drift because the neap tides do not fish a fraction as well as the higher tides. Sandeel worked for us last sunday. Get out there and give it your best! |

on a 4.9 I'll have 160 to 200 feet under the keel, depending on where I fish, at full flow of the tide boat will be drifting at 4 to 5 knots, and no one will catch, as the tide eases down to 2 knots the fish come on and it can be hectic with four anglers into fish on every drift. | Re: Fishing with Shads Off Weymouth we fish them on a long (3m+) flying collar rig on the drift. Use a rotten bottom link on the lead with enough weight to fish with the lead bumping the bottom. Good luck. |
