Portland Marks please

We have just bought a new boat and will be launching from Castletown in Portland Harbour. We have a 20hp engine and the boat is a 15' open type so we can go a fair way in good weather. Please can someone suggest some good marks to start from as we are fairly new to boat fishing. We would like to stay in the harbour or just outside.

Hi Jon, i've only fished Portland harbour from Charter boats when the weather has been to rough to venture far out. Favourite marks with the skippers are over the wreck of the hood & around the entrance by the old forts / military instalations. Theres some good Wrasse fishing surprisingly close to the sea wall & also good Black Bream & Pollack fishing in the tidal currents at the entrance. Good luck mate.

Hi John.

Long time no chat. Good to see you have a boat. OK as I no longer live in Weymouth or Portland any more I can divulge a few secret marks.

Number one for Bass has got to be the 3rd mooring buoy on the left just outside the harbour entrance from the fleet. Fish into the shallow area. You will also get Gilthead Bream.

Castletown Yacht moorings. If you have a fish finder look for 14ft depth. That is where you will find big flounders, Plaice, Bass and good sized Thornback rays.

if you are willing to risk a bollocking from the port authorities, tie up against the 2nd from last pier leg on coaling pier and see if you can break the British Gilthead Bream record. It is there for taking. Problem is that they are so big they just smash you up on the pier legs. I am not sure if you can claim a record from restricted areas.

naturally there is of course the Hood, with Bass, Pollock, Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse, Large Pollock, Mackerel, Gurnard and Garfish. This is a fantastic place to give fly fishing a try.

I used to trailer my boat to portland and had a lot of luck with decent wrasse and some bass at Grove point about halfway down the bill. Even the shambles and adamant banks aren't far off on a good weather day. Unless you only have oars as a back up.I guess you've got a chart to look at? It can tell you loads coupled with a decent sounder. the best marks are the ones you find yourself but it does take time.
