| First fish aboard SeaMouse Hi folks, Short report (for me) as I'm pressed for time this week. Andy G and I got out last weekend, despite the big tides, to christen SeaMouse properly. Things started badly with the A3 being closed, so we rolled into Hayling an hour late with our buddy boat (and bait) long gone. Easy launch and we headed for Bullocks Patch to catch them up. It was way choppier than I'd expected, so we slogged out at a steady 10-12 knots. Dropped in my crab pot, collected the bait from Lady Christine and anchored long enough to land our first Ballan Wrasse (Andy got that one) before we were up for a move to a hound mark. Things went better there, some small hounds, dogs and a small bream. That was Andy again, he was going all-out for bream and bounced a good size one. When the tide died, we came in onto Brake Ledge to catch the start of the flood. At least the sea had settled a bit and I'd no excuse for anchored slap on top of a pot buoy Took some careful shuffling to get the anchor away from that and we settled in again. Down went the feed but the bream just were not having it. Not even the pout came on the feed and we ended up with a ballan of 2lb, a single pout, a gar, dogs and then finally a single decent bream for Andy.Meanwhile, Lady C called in to say they were picking up pollack on an inshore reef so we nipped down to join them for a few drifts. Interesting fishing, just 15' of water. You could see the bottom features and even the top feathers of the string. Picked out 11 pollack, a couple of which were worth keeping. Andy had set out with a jellyworm then shifted to a Dexter Wedge and to our surprise, hauled in a decent ballan. I'd heard they will take lures but it is the first time I've seen it personally. Back to the slip via the (empty) crab pot and an easy recovery, though not until Andy had managed a little mishap. I'll leave him to tell that one (or not) So all in all, not a red letter day but despite huge tides, silly traffic problems and a lumpy sea we got out there and fished. Steve |
