Red face Big Fish+Pier = ARGH!

well, ive talked to my dad about it and i still cant see how hand hauling a fish up gives you a better chance of geting it up on the pier than if you just wind it up and lift it over the wall, so if you get a big fish and you need to lift it without a drop net, is hand hauling better or are you just goosed?

Re: Big Fish+Pier = ARGH!

Difficult one mate
Depends on how big the fish is and how strong your snoods and hooks are.
I try to wind down to the fish, get some leader on the reel and then lift it out in one motion, but if its a right monster then you could just be buggered

Re: Big Fish+Pier = ARGH!

Same as above depends on the fish but if its a tough mouthed fish like conger then you can grab the leader and lift it up or use the rod long as u dont snap it!

think you'll find that a 15lb. snood is a tad risky for lifting fish up a wall or pier!!!!!!!!!

I use 60lb. snoods for cod from the beach! Biggish fish usually have very abrasive teeth, which, if hooked deeply, will cut 15lb snoods like cotton!

Even a whiting will probably break 15lb. line! Do you not find that such a weak hook snood tends to tangle a lot? Try a heavier line for a hook snood mate, Amnesia is a good line, which doesn't have any memory - hence the name...Amnesia - you will probably be safe (ish) with 30lb. from the beach, but for lifting fish, I would suggest using the same line as your leader for a hook snood....
