Beginners question

Hi all,

Dont laugh but how do I kill a fish humanly? I caught two decent flatties at the weekend and felt I did not do a very good job of killing them. I have watched alot of people hitting fish on the back of the head but I tried this and they were still going! Even when I got home two hours later they were still alive. I do not want to put the fish through this so please advise. Also do I kill as soon as they are caught?

grim question but I need to learn the right way.

Cheers

Thumbs up Re: Beginners question

Mark.

Get yourself a priest and crack them on the head good and hard. Some people spear the brain with a knife or needle but your biology should be good before you try that. Others rip out one side of the gills for a quick bleed.

Alternatively gut them on the spot and there will be no question of a quick demise.

you'll get used to it soon enough

Re: Beginners question

flatfish are very hard to kill, more fish it is ok to hit them on the head real hard
flatfish i always wrap inwet newspaper (keeps them alive and fresh) till i get home where i hit on the head very hard then chop it off with a sharp pair of scissors

Re: Beginners question

I'd prefer to kill all my fish straight away rather than them "suffocating". A quick, hard bang over the head with a priest or large stone will do it.
