Re: hooking whole squid?

I`m sure someone will correct me if i`m wrong but this is the way I do it. First of all pull out the backbone which looks like a bit of clear plastic. Some anglers gut them as well but I dont usually bother. Pass your hook through the body a couple of times starting at the pointed end and pull it up your line so its clear of your hook point. Take hold of your top hook and twist your snood line around the shank 2 or 3 times then pass that hook point through the tip of the squid body.It should now be secured and not allowed to slide down to mask the lower hook point. If you`re beach casting for distance, take a few turns of bait elastic and wrap it into a sausage shape. Clip it down and feed those critters.

Re: hooking whole squid?

I do pretty much the same thing as Keana, however I tend to try and remove the skin of the squid first so it's nice and white and I pass the bottom hook down the inside of squid so no snood is visable on the outside.

Other than that a couple of turns on the pennel hook, through the top of the squid, a few turn of elastic and Bob's your mother's brother.

I used to hook the head of the squid on the bottom hook as well, but recently I decided that this just masks the hook point and doesn't really improve my catch rate anyway. So now I don't.

Rich.

Re: hooking whole squid?

another way is to cut the squid on one side, from top to bottom, open him out like a book and rap it around the hooks, then use some elastic tie to finish.

Re: hooking whole squid?

everyone seems different with every bait. as long as the bait stays on the hook and doesn't mask the point then any way is good.

i take it you mean launce as in a greater sandeel? if using it live then lip hook it using a cirle hook, if dead then use it in fillets or sections in a similar fashion to sandeel. you might have trouble getting the eel from the needle to the hook as they are quiet thick.
