Sandeels

I'm hoping to go after the bass on my next trip to Devon at the start of June and have an excellent mark in mind. Having spoken to someone I have been told the best tactic at this mark is to fish a live sandeel under a bubble float and was wondering if anyone has advice on catching sandeels? I've seen somewhere that you can catch them by using a sort of hook which you run in zig zags through the sand, has anyone used this method and, if so, can they explain it in more detail? Thanks.

Re: Sandeels

watched hugh fernly whitinstall do it on river cottage
using what looked like a crow bar shaped piece of flat metal
seems you draw a fast s shape in the wet sand left as tide drops with the curved up end so it stays a very flat very shallow scrape (not digging deep) , then the sandeels get exposed and slither accross wet sand you then try to grab them(he was falling all over place-good for tv) never tried it but is on my too do list too save money
like you hope someone knows better

Re: Sandeels

Thanks all. How long would I be able to keep sandeels in a bucket with an aerator? Teignmouth would be about a 2 hour round trip from where I intend fishing and would like to keep the eels for a few days.

Re: Sandeels

out of do dover you can catch launce and joey macky with shrimp/ small feather rig. good fun on a carp rod.

i don't know if there is any places where you are where you can do the same.

or if you find a sandy beach that has them you can dig them.

well no matter how far u travel with them your going to lose a few however we travel down to slapton and eastportle mouth and keep them alive for that journey but we dont carry the numbers that you will buy from teignmouth.

luke should be the one answering these questions as he sells em!

i think i am right in saying that your bucket/container your wishing to transport them in should have a large surface area it doesnt need to be deep its the surface area of the water that makes all the difference.

you know the somerfield home delivery containers? big blue square thing with 2 half folding lids i have kept sandeels alive for a week or more in one of these i would suggest freezing a couple of 2ltr coke bottles full of water too (remember not to overfill them as once frozen they expand) you can then float these in the water over night to stop the sandeels boiling ready for breakfast
