| Re: Portland suggestions Hi and welcome to the forum. Portland is a bit patchy at the moment with the wrasse offshore in warmer water. Church Ope is always worth a try for flatties and bass. It fishes better in darkness and this weekend is good as the high tides are in the evening. I would fish a bunch of small rag on a size 1 hook for the flatties and a pennel rigged whole squid close in for the bass. The bottom there is sand out to about 60yds where there is a weedy reef. If you try a big mackerel bait near the reef you might even find conger or huss. Sandholes is worth a bash but you need to be careful as it is cliff fishing and accurate carsting is essential to hit the sand between the weed. You can find out more on my website at www.portlandbill.co.uk, have a look at Adrian Jacobs fishing diary in the links section. It's a bit out of date but you can get an idea of what to expect at Church Ope at this time of year. Give me a shout sometime as I would be happy to buddy up and come along with you. Good Luck. | Re: Portland suggestions The end of this month will see thing start to happen as the water temprature increases, or at least lets hope it increases. The water temprature last March was the lowest recorded for over a 100 years. That set the fishing back by almost a month. I know that Plaice are strting to show on the Shambles, so it wont be long before they are on Chesil. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

| Re: Portland suggestions Church Ope can often start to throw up the Plaice around the same time as the Shambles starts to produce, so maybe worth giving it a go anytime soon. However, the wind is now coming from the SE and is forecast to carry on that way for the rest of this week, which will probably keep the Plaice offshore for a while as Church Ope will be pretty rough being East facing. The plus point though with the wind in the SE is that Chesil will calm down and start to clear which could mean the Plaice start to move in there. Steve |

| Re: Portland suggestions Steve. I went for a look for the Mullet in Weymouth Harbour at the weekend. Unfortunatly I couldn't find them. This leeds me to suspect that they were thin lips and they have already moved up into Radipole. Give it another few weeks and the harbour will have huge shoals of them waiting for the sluice gates to open. Only problem is that they don't feed whilst they are waiting to move into the fresh water. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

| Re: Portland suggestions I went back down there at high tide on sunday, well actually I was going to the Farmers Market, so it made for a good excuse to have a quick look. They were still there then, just under the pontoon to the left of the Harbour Masters office. I'm pretty convinced they are thicklips, some are far too big for thinlips. Steve |
