Sandsford Castle 16th Jan

After seeing Greenhearts report about Sandsford Castle in Portland harbour myself and Devon Born decided we would give it a try. I managed to get som efresh pealer Crab and some nice small Ragworm. As we set off the rain started to pour it down and the wind picked up from the South West.

We both baited up with crab on one rod and rag on the lite surf rods. Nothing much happened for the 1st hour, so I decided to put the lite rod in very close at around 20 feet. As I was prepairing my crab bait I looked up and saw the rod tip thump round in a typical Bass bite. I wound into the fish and it took off at an angle. Imagine my surprise when all I landed was a 1/2lb flounder. Still that was the fish that I was targeting.

Not much happened after that except for a Bass bite on the Whole pealer crab just before we packed up.

Re: Sandsford Castle 16th Jan

Thanks Welly. We need to be off to a flier this year to do a bit better in the species hunt than last year. We are targeting the fish that we didn't manage to get last year.

It was exactly where you fished Ian.
I will remeber that spot for the future.

Smile Re: Sandsford Castle 16th Jan

Yes, it's a nice venue mate. Pete Hegg was saying that there is normally a lot of eel grass there, but I had no trouble with weed at all. It looked like most of it had been washed up onto the beach during the last big blow.
Let me know nixt time you go plugging for Bass, I might be able to pop down & join you. Lure fishing is one of my favourite sea fishing methods, although I normally do it in cornwall during the summer. I don,t really know the Portland marks.
