Q: Where best to fish for cod 2 hours from London

I've been doing a little research here.

Option 1: Deal pier, Kent - 1h 45m from Tooting, London (using MS Autoroute)
Apparently this is snaggy. I'm a bit green, am feel a little cautious of snaggy areas. I have made up 3 Pennel rigs (which I read are good for catching cod with). However, if I were to fish at Deal I think I might knock up some Pulley Rigs (as shown at www.nesa.co.uk/rigs.htm). Also, I heard you need to pay about £3 to gain access to the pier.

Option 2: Folkestone – 1h 23m
I don't know much about this place, but I guess the 'pier' or harbour 'arm' is free. (www.google.co.uk/maps cover Folkestone pier well from the satellite view.)

Option 3: Hastings - 1h 42m
Has a pier. Apparently this place isn't snaggy. Better for begginers then?

Option 4: Brighton - 1h 08m
Has a pier, free access. Not sure how snaggy though, or if good for catching cod.

I haven't found any other obvious places. Felixstowe would be an option if the pier wasn't out of action (apparently for 7 years now).

I suppose it's possible to fish from a beach, and not a pier. However, piers offer a little protection from the wind and cold - and that's not a small thing on a cold November evening!

Generally, please correct me if I am wrong here, cod are easier to catch on the East coast of England than the South coast. I know cod like colder, rougher waters which might explain this.

Therefore, I am currently under the impression that my best option is Deal pier (for cod availability). I'll just have to be careful of the snags! I'll start making them Pulley rigs tomorrow...

Any advice on good locations for cod within 2 hours drive would be mucho appreciated.

2 hours from London should get you pretty close to the Bristol Channel (about 120 miles I think) and it's still an area well known for its cod although as with most places in the south it is still hot and miss.

South Wales, gives you lots of options. Starting at the Severn Bridge all the way down to Penarth, many good beach spots to try, lots on the Portishead side too all within a couple of hours from London....

Re: Q: Where best to fish for cod 2 hours from London

Hi there,

My knowledge for what it'sworth....

Hastings Pier is not open at night.... also there is a charge per rod.. I think it is £4.50 for one and £6.00 for two rods. Parking during the day can be a night mare and is expensive £5.00/5hours, also can be a long walk from vehicle to Pier.

Deal Pier is £3.00 or £6.00 all night... If you are thinking of fishing Deal Pier and worried about snags... well it is snaggy in places. If you fish there ask some of the other anglers who have knowledge of the Pier. They are usually friendly and helpful and can give advice.
Parking at Deal is good over the weekend... main carpark across the road is free at night and all day Sunday.

Last weekend on Deal Pier there were a lot of Dogfish, Whiting, Pout and a few Codling upto the 4-5lb mark.

Dungeness, a steep shingle beach on the peninsular of the Romney Marsh shadowed by the Power Station and the beacon of the light house. Nice venue always fishes something…. not sure if Cod are there yet, sea still quite warm, but changing.
Parking is free, beach is free, isolated location really need to come prepared, ie bait, tackle, food, drink etc…

Good Luck (Pheonix)

Re: Q: Where best to fish for cod 2 hours from London

you after cod or coddling?

these venues in order of preference for me.

1) dover admiralty pier, strong tides, lots of coddling, fish high water down, good idea to take a drop net. however the entrance REALLY STINKS of p**s.

2) deal pier, very comfortable fishing, a few big fish (doubles) quite a few coddling, mixture of species, not a snaggy as people say unless your down the bottom ( which i don't like), there's also a wreck!

3) thanet chalk ledges, loads of coddling but not many cod, lots of proms with rails for an umbrella (over high water), plenty of space, it is rough ground so i would use a rotton bottom.

4) boundary road (deal), fished over low water, distance can be an advantage, a few snags, your fishing down the shingle and between groynes so your as snug as a bug, lots of coddling not many cod though.

any advice you want just let us know.
