Re: Problem with gold mag elite HELP!!!!

Have you taken a look inside ?,sounds like the pawl that engages gear is faulty or possibly the spring that tensions the mechanism has come adrift or snapped, cant see that costing more than a few quid, cheaper than £100 plus for a new reel.
ABU will sort it no probs, there are also other reel repair guys around, who are also really reasonable.

Re: Problem with gold mag elite HELP!!!!

Hi Creedy,

Don't despair, Abu Reels are the easiest of all reels to repair. It would probably cost more in postage than it would cost to repair. Have a go yourself or ask a friend who is mechanically minded to do it for you.

If you are going to do it yourself then I would suggest:

If you have a schematic diagram have it photocopied to at least A4 size, but preferably A3. This give you the position of all the bits and pieces. If not then
you can download a copy from

http://www.abugarcia.com//schematics/index.cfm

It looks awesome but I can assure you if you take your time and lay all the bits out as you take them off you won't go wrong.

Strip the reel down, taking lots of close up photographs as you do so. (I assume that you have a digi camera or that you can borrow one) Clean everything from top to bottom with lighter fuel. The brake blocks and the star drag system should be grease/oil free. The drag washers should be replaced, as well as the brake shoes, however they can be cleaned with lighter fuel and rubbed down with very fine emery cloth. If they are dry and free from greese or oil, then leave well alone. Check all gearing for wear and tear.

Check with the drawing to make sure that nothing is missing.

Soak the bearings in lighter fuel and clean, ensuring that they are free running. Oil them with the appropriate oil supplied with your reels, or rocket fuel from a tackle dealer. One drop is sufficient. The bearings are the only parts inside your reel that should be oiled.
Under no circumstance use WD40 or a similar substance on your reels.

Re-assemble reels, covering all gears etc. with a thin smear of light grease. I also smear the inside of both end plates.

Do not overtighten screws.

Now you can oil the handle as per the instruction booklet that came with your reel.

Your reel should now be as good as when it was bought. If you have a problem PM me and I will try and help.

Regards

Drew

15 year old ABU`s were built to outlast the human race, shame the newer ones (even tho they are still excellent quality ),dont last quite as long.....

Try the reel doctor. Here's his web site www.thereeldoctor.co.uk There's a forum on his site where you can ask questions. If you can't do it yourself you could send it or drop it off to him. His name s Nigel and he lives somewhere in Kent.
