Question Where to get bait when fishing at Dungeness?

Hi to you all,

I fished at Dungeness Point today (Sat 22nd Oct) with my eldest son who caught his first fish today .

We left North West Kent this morning hoping to pick up some bait in RYE, unfortunately we could only find one tackle/bait shop and they had no lug.

So we bought frozen Mackeral, Sand Eels and Squid there and drove on down to Dungeness, keeping our eyes peeled going around LYDD as I was informed that some of the bait diggers put out boards if they have lug for sale.

We did not see any signs and soon arrived at Dungeness by the black 'n' white light house we bought from Dungeness some poor quality lug at £7.00 for two score... but really we had no choice at this time but to purchase what was on offer.

So next time we make the trip.... which should be soon as the kids are on holidays this week coming, I would like to know where in the Dungeness/Rye area we can purchase good bait.

We drive through Rye/Camber Sands/Lydd/Dungeness, Local to where we live the tackle shops cater for course fishing not sea angling therefore don't stock lug or rag.

Many thanks for your time, look forward to all replies.

Pheonix

...also, take a fork or a pump with you, get to Dungie for the low water mark, and have a look on the beach for the casts, and dig your own! Dungie Blacks and yellowtails are fantastic, big and full of juicy scent... plus...when you start catching, you'll feel a great sense of achievment, that no-one else contributed to your success...it will have been all down to you!

Failing that, take Robs' advice and ring ahead..

Good luck.

Re: Where to get bait when fishing at Dungeness?

if your after sole then fresh lug is poor compared to smelly/ sticky blacks. point tackle used to be the best around, don't know if he still does them now though.

i would buy half your blacks a week before and leave them in the fridge to go sticky and buy the other half fresh.

best place for fresh is from mikes tackle hythe (about 10 minutes past dungie), order a couple of days in advance.

for codding get fresh yellows from mikes, again order before hand.

Thanks for the tip about bait, it's just the bait I have bought so far in Hastings and Deal have been completely different quality of lug. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Thanks again

where in deal did you buy your bait?

if your going to deal order your bait from steve allmark, channel angling, at the entrance to the pier. he's a top bloke and will sort you out with some quality bait.

Re: Where to get bait when fishing at Dungeness?

Hi Big Guy

I stop at Johns Tackle Shop at the end of the Dover Road just before The Strand as he is open late and as I have 1.1/2 hour drive to get there it is handy for after work.

I know the Shop at the entrance to the pier, but he is closed by the time I get there.... it's ok for in the morning though.

So I guess you fish there... have you been lately to Deal??

Hi Big Guy

Well as it happens I may be down tomorrow night (Friday 28th Oct), I may be finished work early... then take the kids to see Wallace and Gromits latest film (Half Term). Then drive down for the high tide....as the rain may have eased off by then
