Keeping Live Sand Eels

I will be down in Teignmouth in a few weeks and would like to try fishing with live sand eels. My question is what size bucket do I need, and how long would the eels stay alive in the bucket. Do you need a bucket/container with a pump, if so any recommendations?

Thanks Steve.

Cool Re: Keeping Live Sand Eels

HI Steve,

I am by no means an expert on Sandeels, but I do remember seeing an article in one of the sea fishing magazines some time ago.

A guy bought one of those cheap tool boxes with a lid and integral handle. On the top of the box were two medium sized compartments with their own hinged lids. He cut out the dividers and made a hole in the bottom of each.

He then fitted a small shakespeare pump in each with some clear tube down into the body of the box and hey presto a water tight container that he could carry live sandeels in.

But I think maybe Luke from Devon may haver a better idea as he catches a lot of sandeels.

Re: Keeping Live Sand Eels

Hi Steve.

Sandeels need to be kept as cool and aeriated as possible. Remove any dead ones from the bucket as soon as you can and if possible change the water as often as you can.
Masterline and Shakespear both make buckets that have aerators attached to them.

Re: Keeping Live Sand Eels

I read an article in Boat angler recently that stated that sandeels live much longer in round buckets rather than containers with corners. This was a revelation to me, as the sandeel place at Teignmouth keep theirs in square boxes. I have kept sandeel alive for 24 hours in a bucket with an airator fitted, without changing the water. However, I think I was lucky, they really need frequent water change, and as already stated, take the dead ones out or it kills them all. I'm probably gonna try some again myself this week. Buy some one evening, fish through to night, then take 'em home and go at dawn.

Thats the theory, but we'll see.

Darren

Re: Keeping Live Sand Eels

Thanks guys, I bought a round collapsable bait container and air pump from a local tackle shop, so now I am all set for next week.

Steve.
