Chessil Bait?

I am off to Chessil, between Abbotsbury and West Bexington on my hols.

Can anyone tell me the best baits and let me know about bait/tackle dealers in the area please?

I imagine rag, squid and mackerel strips. Possibly peeler crabs?

I've got the portable barbie and foil all ready.

You won't need to cook the bait, raw is fine for most species

Re: Chessil Bait?

Hi Jim,

I own a fishing tackle shop on Portland so if you are down our way drop in and see us at Ultimate Outdoor World. 01305 862228.
Chesil is fishing well at the moment with just about all the summer species in now in good numbers.
Expect to get Dabs, Plaice, Mackerel, Bass, Garfish, Gurnard and if you are very lucky Red Mullet during the day from the Abbotsbury/West Bexington end of the Beach.
Best bait is Ragworm and Mackerel if it is calm. If you get a good blow then drop a whole squid or a Mackerel head just behind the surf for the chance of a good Bass.

Night time you will mainly get Dogfish and Pout and maybe a Bass if you fish close in.
Mackerel and squid are the best baits at night.

If you try the beach down at Ferrybridge you always have a chance of a Trigger from one of the wrecks as well as a smoothound to the right of the car park. All similair species that you would get at Abbotsbury end with the addition of Scad at dusk.

Good luck

Re: Chessil Bait?

Have a great time Jim, I can almost taste beach barbecued Bass right now. Don't forget to take some seasonings with you - black pepper and garlic do wonders. It might be worth doing a recipe search here before you leave, I'm sure there was a thread a while back about favourite Mackerel recipes.
