Dave

Seeing as how you travel to shillingford it would be rude for me not to come down your way. If you want throw some dates at me when you think it will be best.

Hi Dave,

Great write up mate and the piccies make it even better.

Its very good of you to show us your local fishing spots. ( We may come down on a pillage sometime )

It makes it so much easier to have a great time fishing somewhere new when a "local" give you some guidence.

Well done mate

Re: Guide To Budliegh Salterton a year on

went to beach today on a low tide in daylight for the first time in 3 months
wow too say the course of the river at the otter mouth has changed is an understatement, it must have moves 40-50 yards along the beach
the water level has been seriously slowed up by a fallen tree higher up the river(just before one of the better mullet pools?? dont know if this will affect this yet)
took some photos and hope they help anyone heading there soon

new mouth of river(used too run along rocks)

as this is how it used too be

and this is looking along from the main beach

you can just see where the river enters the sea as looking like a pool just in the edge of bay now and comes out near too shingle bank on left(just out of shot sorry)

As a warning
I also noted that the shingle/pebble banks are very unstable along here now9as had a nightmare trying to waddle back up
so be carefull not too set up too close to the edge now

but i think and pray that this new river course looks even more bassy now

Dave

Re: Guide To Budliegh Salterton

So the river now enters the sea on the Budleigh side of the rocks eh?

About 3 weeks a go, I went down there during the day, and the river had diverted the other side of the point. I.E. you could walk on to the rocks on the point without getting your feet wet.

From looking at your photo mate, it's gone back to how it used to be.

I think.

It just goes to show that the beach doesn't half move around a lot.

Rich.

Re: Guide To Budliegh Salterton

just a guess but the recent easterly winds and rough seas has shifted all that shingle?..

if so im so glad im not a fish fighting forces like that!

that river looks great for mulleting though.. maybe when tj comes up your way i will hang on the back with a length of rope and a skateboard!

Re: Guide To Budliegh Salterton

just thought i'd update this thread as never added steamer steps end of beach

this is too the right of the beach and accessable either from the front by either walking along beach or up and over the terrace path, or from the road(with small fingerboard saying beach) at bottom of highstreet( parking is limited so use carpark at bottom of high street and walk over)

then access is down this ramp

which is very uneven so watch your step( heres view back to main beach from top)

there are toilets at the top (and a cafe at the bottom in summer)
cafe just to right of steps from bottom

and looking west to devoncliffs holiday park and straight point(rifle range)

this end of beach is usually quieter and if you walk further right you will be less hastled, be warned though it turns into a a nudist beach after a 5 min(ish) walk

species here are much the same as main beach
but have also seen/know of smoothies, plaice and smalleyed ray comeing off the beaches here

just a beware again, that all of budliegh becomes rammed with tinsel flingers and sunbathers/bbq's on summer eve high tides , but if you pick your moments you can have beach to yourself

best local pub kev is the salterton arms IMHO just in road to left by fish and chippie at bottom of highstreet
