Help with designing a fishing pier...

Hi,

Im a student at Southampton University. As part of my degree (Civil engineering) I have to do a large project on the design of a fishing pier on Western Shore, close to the Itchen in Southampton (I notice theres interest in fishing in the area) The project is only theoretical, and I think that it will be unlikely that one could be built because of planning reglations etc.

Heres my problem. I dont fish. It would be great if anyone could give some suggestions about what fishermen would want from a specifically designed pier. Im thinking about how deep the water has to be before it can be used, what services you'd need, the maximum height above the water level you cna be. Things like that. Any information would be great.

And remember, the work we do becomes property of Southampton city council, so its at least a step in the direction of getting it built!

we are loons and will fish in 2" of water through to the marianis trench(5mile deep) if we thought there were fish in it , a pier would need to be as long as possable and needs to be about 3 m wide so someone can get past when a rod is proped on the hand rail , and i would think it would need to be 5-8 m above high tide mark to allow for waves (a beach rod will lift a fish ok not like a fresh water fish that you use a net with to land a fish = if its a big fish you can walk it back to the beach to land it )

and a tackle shop,burger bar, a heated room (for those cold winter nights) a paperboy? steps to get down too the waters edge every so often.. sometimes u need a bucket of water for washing hands etc.
toilets! litterbins! lighting! a large canopy that covers the pier so we dont get wet
oh the list is endless!

a chippie serving extra large portions and reclining chairs every six foot.

BAZW where are you fishing with 5-8Mtr waves ( 15' - 24' SURFS UP!! )

I do a lot of pier fishing and still like the old pier at Bridlington, but would like the wall to have a slight angle over the water. If you want further help without the jokers E-mail me an i will reply with my ideas. A little help with things like ... will shipping be mooring to the inner wall.... size etc.

Well length is always a good thing and its just the basics of light, shelter and somewhere to put your rubbish

Would be great to have steps down every say 100yrds so if you get a big one, then you could walk it to the steps , but health and safty might be a problem on that one

Info... like ad.. chart of the depth ect as you walk along the pier you know the depth of the water and the ground that you are fishing

although not my problem have noticed several threads that include access for disabled as this can sometimes be only available fishing oppertunity for some, good luck with project !!!
