Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... Definately toilets would be a good thing. Depending on length of pier maybe a couple of sets (mens, womens and disabled). A small tackle and bait kiosk at the land side. Maybe some bench seating up the centre so that you can sit down while fishing either side. Minimum height parapet allowable under H&S regs. to make landing fish as easy as possible. A few shelters along the length of the pier and somewhere to get some food and drink. Protection to the pier supports should be as smooth as possible to prevent snags. Large blockstone can result in lots of lost tackle (but can provide good habitat for fish). Overhead obstructions should be kept to a minimum to prevent rods getting caught when casting so type of lighting would need to be considered carefully.

Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... A good thread seeing as it's right on my doorstep, i would like to see Lighting, toilets, tackle shop and somewhere you could go for a warm and something to eat for the winters evenings. You would also need to add a large magnet on a moving crane for removing all the old bike frames and shopping trolleys. You could also ban all dogs, as they try to eat your bait or sandwiches and s**t all over the place. __________________ Rough seas = Ground baiting

Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... This sounds interesting, could end up being the standard by which piersare judged. Rod rests are a must, decent seating (barstool style), some kind of sink area for washing and drinking would be good. Electrical points for a kettle would be great, also.... under side lighting to act as an attractant for nite fishing.... over head lighting kept to a minimum to avoid light pollution. A good length to the pier would help.... giving say.... 30 foot depth. Some man made structures to act as homes for eels etc. __________________ I dont catch em I feed em

Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... Thanks a lot for the replys guys. Theres loads of stuff that ive taken on board. keep it coming! Disabled access is one of the requirements. I also has to be fishable for at least 6 hours a day, and accomodate 100 fishermen, so is no small pier. Here's the site. http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.c...ut.x=6&out.y=7 I dont mean to get everyone's hopes up too much. Its only a uni project! and im not being paid for it im afraid!

| Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... Hi Andy Is this pier if it does happen going to replace the old timber one that is there now?? I can see that this might go ahead as the whole area is under redevelopment, the old Vosper Thorycroft site has been flattened to make way for a new shopping and housing development, there is still an issue with the sewage works and the boat park and the old pier is next to that. So if the plans go ahead which they are going to, then the pier might just be on the back burner at the councils planing office. | Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... Hey Andy - interesting project! Might be worth considering designing the structure with a bend halfway along. This will create a 'sheltered' side to the pier which will enable safer angling during rough seas (less exposed side with calmer water) and it could be argued would be beneficial to disabled / junior anglers because the calmer water should attract fish such as mullet which feed in calm water - usually feeding off crustaceans along the pier wall. This eliminates the requirement to be able to cast far, if at all and thus can only be seen as a good design implementation for safety and ease of use... As far as lighting goes I particularly liked the aforementioned idea of having lights shining down into the water. This would attrct small baitfish and prawns which would inturn attract bigger species. It would also improve the 'angling experience' because we would be able to see our tackle as we bring it up the pier wall. As far as actual structure goes - big storm-proof boulders along the sides makes things very awkward for angling and so I would rule this option out if at all possible. I would also include peg numbers along each side of the wall. These should be spaced about 5ft apart and just consist of painted numbers from 1 - whatever! These would be used for angling competitions. __________________ South Wales Angling Guide - Shore Angling in South Wales |

Re: Help with designing a fishing pier... Hi Andy Thinking about this i would make it about 35-40 foot wide if you have fisherman both sides back swing on a cast can be lethal with new fishermen. so not to narrow,i for one would try to keep boats away from mooring against it, and V shape would be nice little or no tackle loss on any groins, plus act like a boat hull and deflect waves back out to sea instead of washing anglers in therefore could be a lot closer to the water. thats my two penth.
