Help Needed

Hi guys,
First of all what a great site. I am a carp angler by heart but have recently moved near the coast and want to take up some beach/pier fishing at Clacton or Walton. Im going to use my carp gear as it is not very expensive. Can anybody give me any idea about what baits rigs etc to use and also what can be caught at various times of the year. Thanks guys.
Clacton David

Re: Help Needed

Hi David,

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not a beachcaster myself, but I'm sure when the lads come on board later this evening with their reports someone will assist you.

Cheers

Drew

Re: Help Needed

Hi David, Welcome aboard.

Firstly, I'm only a novice really myself. What I would say though is that your carp gear will be great for going for the summer species like bass, mullet and mackerel, but you won't be able to use it as a full on beach rod. For it to be able to perform there it needs to chuck a 4-6oz lead as hard as you can, which carp rods can't handle.

You have picked just the right time to get started with the gear you've got though. Over the next few months, mackerel will be inshore and catchable on a sliding float rig with a small strip of mackerel as bait. Alternatively, you can use a small lure like a dexter wedge, and you may pick up the odd bass that way too. There are threads on this forum which will show you how to set up the various rigs, including the sliding float.

As far as your local area is concerned, someone will be along on the forum I'm sure to give you the heads up on where to go. Failing that, pop into the local tackle store.

Good luck, Darren

Re: Help Needed

Thanks for the welcome and hints. I will be a regular here so will let you know how I get on both on the beach and also on the carp side. Just to let you know that last week the wife joined me on a day at a local lake where I took loads of small fish and 2 carp 1 about 15lbs and another at about 10lbs. Wife was quite impressed .

Cheeers
Dave
