those damn whiting

hi all
im fairly new ta fishing, ive been fishing off sheerness/minster beach and all ive ever caught is whiting, now i dont know if im doing something wrong or not casting far enough or what, i dont mean ta sound ungreatfull but its getting a bit annoying now, ive been using a lug/rag/squid cocktail sometimes just one or the other or bit of this bit of that, on a 3.0 pennell pulley (only rig i know lol) me castings not great but its not too sad, me mates have said there is other fish out there..... must be other fish out there.... surely..... i was just hoping anyone could throw us a few tips on possible tech's for getting anything other than..... i cant even bring myself ta say the name...... sodding whiting..... any info would be much appreciated cheers

Re: those damn whiting

when hoards of yting are feeding hard its either:-

1, just toughing it out and useing the law of averages to fish through them to get something else.

2, wait for the tide cycle to change and turn the ytings off and other species on.

3, move venue.

4, fish whole whiting on a large hook/s either dead or livebaited.

Re: those damn whiting

Give it a couple of months and the Thornback rays will make an apperance all around the island. They will show anywhere from Bartons point all the way round to leysdown. For a good chance of Codling you should try fishing at Garrisons point as it is a much deeper stretch of beach, since it gets dredgged out fr the docks.

Whiting can be a right pain in the a**e!!! You just have to try and fish through them and hope a codling is about.

Do you even get the chance to fish off the island?? Would improve your chances of getting different fish 100%

Joe

Re: those damn whiting

cheers fellas
im a great believer in the law of averages but still they keep coming, im a bit limited on venue i do drive but i've been told ya have ta hit the east coast (dover/deal/etc) to get anywhere good, i was hoping there was somewhere a bit more local, i dont fancy driving all that way at silly o'clock in the morning, few of the boys are planning a trip down that way somewhere soon just for something diff, was thinking about dungie, id prefer ta go somewhere i bit less crowded as me casting aint that great (accuracy) and dont wanna be accidently snagging up other peeps lines casting over them (ambitious i know lol) or drifting through them im thinking about the point next joe, i remember going there as a kid with me dad n him having quite a lot of luck down there, ive mainly been sticking to bartons upward, and ive thought about using the lil blighters as bait before jay but thought they'd be too big (ave about 20cm) for shore fishing, i know bigger bait bigger fish but thoght that would be too big ive heard the thornbacks are coming soon.... cant bloody wait, i like the idea of bagging one of them
once again cheers folks prob see ya out there !

Re: those damn whiting

useing a large bait is going to be a waiting game, especially a livebait , and i'd do it on a second rod while i scratch about with another,
you'd be surprised at just how big a live bait a bass/cod/conger will tryfor.
i've only caught once on an intended live bait and that was a 2 1/2 lb bass that took pout of about 6inches , i think its eyes were bigger than its belly but it tryed and got hooked , 15-20cm ytings imho would be a good size to livebait in close for bass, especially if there are a lot of anglers catching and returning whiteing , if the good sized bass are about they may be hoovering up these returns.
i don't know what species or techniques work in your area, so locals could direct you better than i.

good luck
