anybody fished Hill Head, Hampshire?

Hi everyone,

I'm getting quite experienced at Fishing Hampshire Beaches, my local being those at Gosport which I think are the best around. The only beach I have never tried but will do soon is Hill Head.

I've checked it out at low water a few times and there are loads of banks of shingle at the eastern near lee-On-Solent but at high water I wouldnt be able to get out far enough to pass them into deep water. I know its good for quality smut but at which part, casting range etc?

I read a report of some guys catching Thornback ray last weekend which was interesting.

Does anybody have any experience fishing this beach?

Cheers,
James

Re: anybody fished Hill Head, Hampshire?

Hello S,F .
We ve been fishing stokes quite a lot this winter but not got as far as Hill head, i know as i m sure you do that it fishes well for smuts come spring but that is all i do know.
Which gosport marks do you recomend?
As ive mentioned stokes bay is our local but are there any hot spots along the beach or any better beaches worth a bash.
Cheers john.

Re: anybody fished Hill Head, Hampshire?

Hi John,

My local is stokes bay too but i don't tend to fish that beach very often preferring Gilkicker, Browndown and Haslar Wall. I've found the two best parts of Gil and brown require a healthy walk.

Try parking at stokes bay/Browndown carpark and then walk about about a mile west until you reach the last big mound of earth. Here you will find the deep water just before it starts to shallow again at lee-on-solent and there is a small rocks and mussels where the shingle meets the sand about 30 yards from the high water mark. Great for Bass, pout, whiting, ray and its looks plaicy but havent caught one yet.

For Gilkicker park along the road and then cut across the golf course where you come to the fort. keep going east along the beach until you reach the wall. Here you will find deep water, strong tides and all types of fish like doggies (after or during a good blow), pout, bass, whiting. Try a mackeral flapper close in for a big Bass this summer.

Both these beaches this time of the year are poor like every where else but I tend to find a few more at them even at this time. I like Haslar when we get strong winds from the west as its east facing with a wall behind you for protection. I catch Smoothound at all these beaches in June. If you try these beaches and are not catching stop casting too far, the fish can be at your feet but angle you rod down more otherwise your bait is lifted too far off the bottom.

What part of stokes bay would you recommend and hows it been fishing?

Cheers,
James

Re: anybody fished Hill Head, Hampshire?

Thanks for that James, weve fished between the cafe and the life boat station quite a lot this year with pretty poor results.
Plenty of pout and pin whiting but little else.
Also fished selsey but as you say most beaches are slow at the moment but things should soon be picking up with the arival of the first Bass .
We had a good session about a mile up the Hamble the other morning ,caught 5 Bass between 1-2lb and saw some bigger ones.
Thanks again for the info, ive only lived down here 18 months so i m still searching out the best marks.
john

Hi John,

Yes, I saw Bens pics of the Bass and you in the background - lol! Great result particually for this time of year.

You say you fished Selsey, your not the 'john' who posts on the 'Solent Fishing Guide' website are you??

I only moved to the area 16 months ago so like you i'm still learning the area. I joined a local fishing club and I thought i fished well until I started entering the club matches. On my first in january I only caught a doggie and a pout, the winner (10 of us fished) caught 6 pout and 9 doggies and made me realise I've still got a lot to learn!

James
