Bristol Channel cod

Bristol Channel cod - Well went fishing today down the Bristol channel near Avonmouth . Met up with Old Smoothound and the lines were cast out at about 7am . We were to fishing two hours up and two hours down

The weather was over cast and no need for sun cream

The rigs were a mixture of pulley and two up one down fishing rigs , with 6oz grip leads ( for thoughts who do not know the Bristol channel has one of the biggest tide races in the world )

The bait on the day was lug worm and a bit of mackerel

Well almost as soon as we had our baits out we seemed to be getting some knocks mmm I though this could be a good couple of hours coming up . I miss my first knock but as I turned around I saw Shaun bringing one in




This contained all up tide with both having fish – codling and flounder nothing of any size but hay a bite is good for me from the shore










That’s about it on the day had a few more fish down tide . The day was wonderful and the company tops ( plus bacon butty ala Old Smooothound ) What better way of spending a few hour on a Sunday

No mate shaun had them ( git )

And ben the weather was like december bloody cold and wet but hay better than DIY

Well done chaps - nice to hear there are a few codling still around. Isnt this a good sign that we are all catching small codling cause that way they should all grow for next year ?

Hope it means things might improve .....

Yes mate - me and shaun were chatting about it on the day

They were all in great condition and fat little buggers so next year should be good ( hope the trawlers dont get them )

And when you think how many must have come up on the tide

Sounds hopefull eh Rich - do you reckon its worth having a pop for them from Aust or is that a little far up the channel now for this time of year ? Just wandered as its a big tide this week at a convenient time !

I'd try between Aust and New Pasage mate but has to be at least a 12.5 metre tide.
