| Baiting hooks Many years ago as a youngster, I was always told to hide the hook as well as I could within my hookbait. I've been reading this, and a few other forums, and it seems that nowadays many anglers simply attach the bait to the hook once.... with the point exiting through the skin side. Has this method proved effective with all sea fish or just with a number of species in particular? Yesterday I fished from Princess Pier, Torquay using a ledgered sand eel. I attached my eel to the hook and passed the hook through the bait three times for security. I didn't think that this looked particularly 'natural' as the eel was convoluted, but I went with it anyway (and caught nothing incidentally)! Should I have hooked the bait once and then tied the body to the shank of the hook? Any pointers would be very gratefully received! | Re: Baiting hooks I usually just thread a frozen sand eel up a baiting needle and push it round the hook (hook point coming out the mouth), a little thread for security and the jobs a good un! The trick with sandeel is to try keeping them frozen for as long as possible, once they have slightly thawed the skin becomes soft and it is nigh on impossible to put them on with out them ripping apart. | Re: Baiting hooks That's what your jeans are for.... Or a rag if your posh! ![]() I use both for the record. Jeans/Rag for cleaning guts of all kinds, saving my tshirt for drying my hands after a wash in waves. om May have to get a pack of Eel's for next trip..... Last time I used them was erm.... a few.. years ago...When the bait shop at the end of South Parade Pier had run out of Rag. Now that shows just how long ago it was to those that *may* remember that shop. ![]() __________________ -- Bart Rank : Rod Rattling Rookie! Bait Bung'ing Beginner! | Re: Baiting hooks Thanks for pointing me in that direction Mike. So, this elastic.... is it a simple case of wrapping a length of elastic around the baited hook where it will hold there by its own means or do I need to tie the elastic at one end, wrap around the bait firmly and then tie again at the other? __________________ 2012 species: Whiting, LS Dogfish, Grey Mullet, Mackerel |

| Re: Baiting hooks Steve being right handed I hold the middle of the bait & hook(s) in my left hand, get the end of the elastic between my thumb & the bait then whip down to the bottom of the hook, then back up continuing up to the top of the bait (whipping it to the line if it's a sandeel). 3 or 4 turns of the elastic in the same place will cause it to grip itself, then just pull to break the elastic. Elastic comes in different qualities & thicknesses, as it's quite cheap, just try a few different ones till you find one you like. Very fine elastics are good for soft worms, but can snap too easily when you are whipping mackeral & squid together in the freezing cold when you are a bit ham fisted. One thing is certain.... when using elastic you ARE going to get smelly fingers. Good luck __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:> |
