Serving Mackerel...

Not for human consumption, although the beast I have for bait was actually meant for it.

Not going to be able to use it whole, due to last time using anything anywhere near the size of it for bait I was fishing for Barracuda off the Canary Islands....
Eastney beach just not have the same feel to it....

Hints, Tips, Advice on Rigs and how to 'serve' please.
n00b friendly would be nice.

Also, just in case I splash out when getting my good ol' faithful Rag, I branch out for some squid or little mack's (as were spotted in bait freezer in packs of 3, which end to end would poss still fall short of the one I have!), any advice more that welcome there too.

Re: Serving Mackerel...

lay ye mackerel flat ona bait board and with a filllet knife just behind the gill cut down as far as the backbone only , then turn the blade 90 degrees and cut the fillet off the bone towards the tail.
repeat with the fillet on the other side.
with the fillet layed skin side up cut into required size, 1 inch wide slices cut slightly diagonally across the fillet are the usual, hook lightly - in and out one end with the point exiting the skin side.
or cut the strips into 3 small squares and kebab up the shank of the hook ensure the hook point stands clear.

Re: Serving Mackerel...

Thanks for the serving suggestion.

Now I just need to pluck up the courage to actually have go!
In place of a bait board would be the beach, not got a filleting knife (should of picked up mate's last night when robbing his bivvy!), but I'm sure fish aren't going to be that overly fussed on a nice looking presentation.
(I was a Chef in my younger years, so some habits never die....)

So may just have to butcher it up as best as possible as close to advice as I can.
Have 2 monster sized Mack's 'donated' from estranged wife's work....
Local Family Run Fish Market
A source that is going to be well used, but not overly abused.

Maybe 1 for tonight's first EVER solo night fish, and the other to 'show off' with when I next go fishing with my mate.

Will report back any sort of outcome, not matter how good or bad.
Always good to be able to look back and laugh at yourself when you know better later on.
