Reel advice needed please

HI all,

I am sure the more experienced anglers amongst you have had this question
more than once, but I am a complete newbie to beach fishing, so here goes in the hope to get some valuable comments and advise here.

I am upgrading my reel and rod, after buying a £30 all in packet from ebay to see if I liked fishing or not :-)

The intention is to just go fishing on the beach for bass, mackerel, cod and more of the likes

As for the rod I have in mind the SHAKESPEARE SALT FS 12" rod

But here comes the reel, which ones would you guys go for if any
  1. Daiwa Emcast Evo
  2. Fox Stratos FS10000E
  3. Shimano Navi 7000
  4. Mitchell 667FG

These are the 4 reels I have come up with, minding that I am on a budget.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Peter

Re: Reel advice needed please

Defo go for either the diawa or the shimano as they always make good reels, even the cheapies are well put together and. Never used fox so couldnt say much about them and I dont like Mitchell gear as i have had issues with the cheaper gear Personally I would go for the Diawa Emcast, but thats cos I got one thats a few yrs old and it has NEVER let me down, even after giving it some abuse on Dungeness beach with heavy loads (weed, tackle and the odd fish lol). Shimano are a sign of quality though so its all down to personal choice i guess.

Re: Reel advice needed please

Thanks for the advice guys. From what I can read here it's either going to be the Shimano or the Daiwa. Wii let you know what I got in the end :-)

Re: Reel advice needed please

Daiwa all the time - but basically look at line capacity , number of ball bearings , quality of gearing .
Fox are only good for making biscuits and mints - Mitchells make cheap tat when it comes to sea fishing - same as Leeda..

good luck with whatever you choose - remember to shop around including flea bay - theres some bargains to be had - dont be afraid of buying a second hand top quality reel - usually better than a new cheaper one .

Re: Reel advice needed please

lol.

Well I have done the "deed", and have gone for a Shakespeare Tidewater rod
and a Okuma Distance Surf 80 Reel.

It is well within my budget, and both rod and reel got good reviews, so I thought give it a go.

Another extra is that the rod came in a combo with the MItchell 667FG reel lol.

Well that's my first upgrade from a £30 all in crap package on ebay,

Now I just got to figure out what to tell the missus when the parcels arrive

Anyway guys, thanks for your advice and help

Regards,

Peter
