Question Abbotsbury

im pretty new to sea fishing and still pretty baffled, im thinkin of going to abbotsbury, tomorow or monday. or if anyone can suggest anywhere else fishing well atm? or well suited to a novice like me?

i was wondering how far to cast out at abbotsbury, and if a pennel rig would be ok there?

would really appreciate some help!

Re: Abbotsbury

hi craig,
over this weekend high tides are at dusk and are springs ( big tides)forcast winds are force 2-3 from the west or southwest , which is a good prospect, take care if the winds stays s/w and the wind/waves pick up anything over force 4-5 can be a little iffy with 2meter + waves hitting the shingle
if you fish in daylight expect to find lots of people feathering for mackerel, (the mackerel should turn up at dusk along with scad,)
float fish 30-40 yards out with a fish strip bait set at 4-6ft deep for the gars in daylight.
bait fishing on the bottom might turn up the odd gurnard , flattie, in daylight but prospects would be better after dark + most of the feather flingers will leave the beach.
a mackerel head n guts fished close ( under 40 yds ) on a long snood either with a pennel 2/0-4/0 or a large single hook 4/0-6/0 gives a good chance of bass,( don't shine any lights on the water)
and a variety of species are possible further out, experiment with distances.

g/l gord.

Re: Abbotsbury

cheers geejayy, thts really helpful, how much weight would u suggest using when float fishing i have no idea! also what did u mean by "snood"?

should i keep the depth at about 6 feet for the bass or just keep trying different depths?

cheers

Re: Abbotsbury

the float fishing is aimed mostly at garfish coz they will feed in the day, chance of mackerel& scad like this too depth set to 6ft or less because the gars feed near the surface, just use enough weight to get the float to cast and cock, ( about an ounce or so should do) nice big 6inch or so sea float, and use smallish hooks , size 2 or 4 nick fish strip one end only and let it flutter.

the bass if your lucky will be just behind the beakers between 10 ft and 40 odd yards out looking for all the mackerel heads that the feather fishers chuck in after gutting their catch, thay will be on the bottom. but use a long snood. so wave action will move it about naturally about 3ft should do

snood = length of line with hook at one end attached to the rig body .

top tip- walk away from the carpark areas because they will get crowded & find a little space , no one likes to walk to far but fishing too close to the next guy gets frustrateing,
serious anglers targeting bottom feeding fish tend to head left or right up to a mile or so ( its hell of a walk) especially to the left at abbotsbury where the water is deeper the mark is known as dragons teeth where a line of concrete tank traps march over the bank to the water on the corner of the fleet.
