Secret of catching in the med on yer hols.

Just back off me hols in Ibiza and i've met a few brits out there with their rods and reels.
Fair enough they've taken their own tackle and sized it down from yer normal size 3/0 2/0 and 1/0 aberdeens, vikings etc and bought with them some light gear more in keeping with the bream that you will probably get in the med.
And fair play to them for thinking in the right direction. I know that you can catch the bigger species in the deeper waters of the balerics in the sands away from the volcanic rock areas. You'll get wahoo and stingray and thornbacks and even barracuda.But this is aimed at the brits that fancy a bit of funfishing outside yer hotel complex, after having snorkeled about and getting the bug in the sun.

So to the method.
Firstly forget the saltwater tactics that you would employ under normal light circumstances and try to think in a more freshwater float fishing kinda way.

I used a bodied waggler float that took 4SSG shot fished about ten yds out and fished about 4ft deep. 3lb straight through mono.
Shot the float slightly high in the water so that bite indication is uneffected by the action of any waves that come your way.Use most of the shot about 6 inches from the hook bait and use a tiny size 16 freshwater hook.
Bait to be used is small pieces of bread that you can easily sneek out of yer all inclusive hotel at breakfast time. Just mould it roud the hook so it covers all of the hook but leaving the point exposed. Then you can expect a bite a chuck. If you've not had abite after about a minute then rebait because of the little bait robbing fry fish that are in plentifull supply have stripped yer hook.
After a wee while you'll get fed up with catching these:



And you'll want something a bit bigger. So just chuck in a big bit of crust and let the little one consentrate on the crust while you cast over and beyond the crust bringing it back again once you float has cocked.(this is why you shot you float with all of the weight nearer the hook. So you can get the bait down fast and awy from the litte nibblers

Still not massive but the last one was a couple of ounces over a pound and gave a good scrap on light tackle.

Reminds me of the time I fished crete, they were all specimen fish like that, the locals went berserk when I put them back, LOL

Yeah i know the waiters kept asking for the bream.
Supprising how many brits that like to fish when on holiday but dont take small enough hooks with them.You cant get the smaller sizes in most resorts.
I must have met 20-30 brits with rods fishing with bits o bacon on 2/0 hooks.
Never going to happen
Think roach or dace gear when fishing the med

I caught loads of them little silver fish last time I was in ibiza!!! They look like Bream to me? I brought a handline with a float attatched for about 3 euros. For bait I found a Jar of small shrimps and a loaf of bread!!!! I sat in San Antonio bay for the day nursing a hangover and had a whale of a time lol

Yeh, know what you mean...hook size, fortunately my Brother tipped me off on that one, I took some trout hooks which were meant for fly tying, Thats all I did was fish in crete, apart from getting rather drunk!
