First Sea Fishing Trip ever

Hello,

I'm planning on doing some fishing off the rocks at Lyme Regis at the weekend. I've not sea fished before and am looking forward to it. Can anyone recommend a good rig and some basic kit for up to £100 all in? I'd be hoping to catch mackerel and bass if I'm lucky so any good tips for these would be welcome!

good luck with the bass - they can be a nightmare to find but there should be mackerel by the plenty plus garfish and pollack and perhaps wrasse..
Either go into veals tackle shop in Brizzol and ask them to kit you out or visit the shop in West Bay where they will do the same .
12-14 foot rod
Fixed spool reel
18lb mainline
60 lb shockleader
half dozen sets of mackerel lures ( not feathers - they are crap )
half a dozen ( more if your poor at casting ) 5 ounce leads
pack of lead links - NEVER tie the lead direct to the end of the ready made rigs as the lead is bound to end up either 300 foot over the horizon or worse, over someones nut and a resulting painful death

the bits and bobs you will get for a tenner - the mainline for about 7.50 - dont get cheap kit - its not worth saving 3 squid
that will leave you enough for a tidy rod and reel combo and try and get a good deal on a 6 foot tripod while you are there - beg if need be to get a good deal ..
good luck

Re: First Sea Fishing Trip ever

cant really add to S&M
other option is to float fish there, its a neap tide so should be ok for the summer species

be carefull on those rocks though as they are a tad slippery in places, we normally fish inside the arm

Re: First Sea Fishing Trip ever

Thanks both, some really useful tips.

Going to Veals tonight to ask their advice on tackle.

I'm afraid I don't know what a neap tide is, nor what fishing 'inside the arm' is!

Guess I have a lot to learn!

Re: First Sea Fishing Trip ever

Ok. approx 5 hours fishing off the rocks at end of the cobb today as my first trip. Not a sniff! I've been using an 8 ft spinner, braided line with approx a foot of mono filament and then a Toby wedge. Would have thought I'd have got at least a few bites.

I also bought a Saltiga Minnow so I might try that tommorrow.

Any tips?

Re: First Sea Fishing Trip ever

Never done spinning for bass mate but try looking for breakwaters ie places were the waves are churning up the bed a little "fish food blender". I would also reccomend picking sharp bright colours for sunny day and dull coulours for dull days. Another pointer probably the most effective is Go spinning for bass at dawn and dusk and dont be afraid to get in the water waist high and work your way with the tides. Bass like a big head of water behind them to retreat into. BUT DONT GET CUT OF BY THE TIDE..all the best mate let me know how you get on. hope this helps
oh keep some spare treble hooks with you they get hammerd by rocks!
