hurst spit- what where how? hi, im camping at hurst view with my son in a month and he wants to go beach fishing instead of exploring the new forest on the back of my motorbike, which i cant blame him for really! i noticed a place called hurst spit seems to be a popular spot, trouble is i haven't fished for 20 years and while my rods and reels have been kept in good condition the rest of my tackle is rubbish and wouldve been no good for the sort of fishing we want to do anyway, so i need some advice please. dont want to use fresh bait because of the camping and the bike and nippers never fished before, so its lures jellies or spinning, i would like to catch something worth eating eg a few mackerel but beggars cant be choosers, we're doing it for the craic i know catching anything would be a miracle. so what does anyone suggest?

Re: hurst spit- what where how? unless you go accross on the ferry from Keyhaven its one helluva walk up to the castle but if you mean the shingle bank in genenal then spinning might produce the odd mackerel or pout - the tides are huge up there and most of the fishing is only on the ebb tide on small tides but try float fishing a bit of rag ( go to the shop in new milton ) , otherwise a sliver of mackerel belly will do the trick .. black bream , pollack, mackerel and garfish should all be about in numbers by then . __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting Last edited by scottish_and_mental; 04-25-2011 at 05:11 PM.

Re: hurst spit- what where how? Hurst castle is brilliant for spinning and the target fish should be about next month. If you don't fancy the walk (you could always spin as you walk along the bank) there is a ferry that runs from Keyhaven to the castle. Best spot for spinning is the turbulent water behind the castle facing the Isle of Wight. Loads of mackerel, gars, scad and bass to be taken on lures there. Never tried jellies there so let me know how they work! If you fish off the far east end it is very deep and can also be a good spot for spinning. The whole shingle bank will produce for lure fishing though especially at dawn and dusk. The rocks at the end of the cut bridge is another favoured spot. It really is a great mark and a lovely place to fish, good luck!
