Question When to fish Chesil beach for mackerel?

Hi there, my first post.

In the 1980s I fished Chesil beach for mackerel and had lots of fish. I do not have a record of when I was there and would like to know when the mackerel arrive in that area as I would like to revisit and have another go at them this summer.

I would be in a touring caravan and be in the area for about a week.

Thanks,

Fortyfoot

Re: When to fish Chesil beach for mackerel?

You are looking at any time from May onwards with the bigger shoals present through july and august/september..
they WILL be there earlier but further out and few and far between .
Keep returning for reports of the shoals moving East ..
Steve

Thumbs up Re: When to fish Chesil beach for mackerel?

Thanks Steve, that suits me fine, I am in the Lakes most of June, so I have the option of May or July before the school holidays!

Re: When to fish Chesil beach for mackerel?

What happens is the first shoals arrive in Mid March, though they normally are out of range of all but the longer range casters. They arrive in huge shoals from the breading grounds, then as the season progresses the shoals actually become smaller and split up. That is why by the time July and August come around you will have spells when a shoal comes through chasing the fry close to the shore, then a period of normally no more than an hour will pass before the next shoal passes through.

Thanks for that. I think I will try for May before we go to the Lakes. Any good touring caravan site you could recommend?

Re: When to fish Chesil beach for mackerel?

Try East Fleet farm http://www.eastfleet.co.uk/ its a lovely friendly caravan park on the Fleet. Great if you want to try for a Bass or Flounder from the Fleet. It is not far from Chesil Beach car park where you can target all the species on Chesil including Mackerel.

If you want a site that is right on Chesil then you could try Freshwater Bay holiday park. It has slightyl better facilities and night life if you are into that. Obviously it is more expensive. It is just outside Burton Bradstock.

Thanks that looks great, hot bacon sandwiches and a pot of tea on the bank!

Prices are OK also.
