I'll be there (consent already obtained!). Where exactly are the sand patches though?? I'm busy stripping the lead off local churches for the next few weeks to make sure I've got enough. Call that a big tide??? It's a little girly tide, even our neaps are twice the size of that!

Talking Re: Devon Meet - Sat 12/02/05 - Main Thread

you can count on me being there come hell or high water !!!

it may be a little strange to some, im even been laughed at for doing this, but my favourite way of fishing is to use this cheap little £5 4foot rod that i have, put nothing on but a weight and trace with a little ragworm on the end and fish in my little wrasse whole. it is always funny to see people sneer and laugh at me before they punch a 6oz lead off into the horizon, and then to watch the amazement on their face as i start pulling up wrasse up to 4lb!!!

i guess i'll see you all on the 12th!

Hi Pross,

Ive fished here for about 25 years and i still cant remember where the sand patches are, but to be honest there are rock patches all the way up on the outside, even out to about 180 yards so long range casting isnt going to mean you'll miss them. You just got to give it a go and see what happens, if you start to loose tackle ...move up a bit, theres plenty of room, after all the breakwater is 3/4 mile long.

Or you can see where I'm fishing... did that just give the game away?

Regards
Nigel.

i hate the breakwater ... cant we go somewhere that we can catch fish?

i mean berry head a few hundered yards further up the road...loads of room possibility of cod dabs flounder plaice ...along with all the other species you will get from breakwater and alot less tackle loss and deeper water probably more shelter from winds than the breakwater too...

sorry to moan but i hate the breakwater

Re: Devon Meet - Sat 12/02/05 - Main Thread

TO BE HONEST i THINK i AGREE TOO.
ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT ANNOY THE RANGER IF HE STARTS SEEING ALL THE CARS PILING DOWN THERE.IN FACT HE WILL STOP YOU IF YOU HAVENT GOT AN ORANGE BADGE.
SO MAYBE THE BREAKWATER AINT SO BAD AFTER ALL, CHEAP PARKING,TOILETS FLAT EASY WALK, I FISH BOTH AREAS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND TO BE HONEST BOTH PLACES FISH PRITTY MUSH THE SAME AT THE MOMENT.
I THINK UNLESS WE CAN ALL GET THERE B4 THE RANGER IS ON DUTY THEN I THINK THAT MAYBE IT ONLY FAIR TO MEET AT THE BREAKWATER.UNLESS OF COURSE YOU DONT MIND THE WALK THERE AND BACK.
ITS OK FOR ME COS I LIVE 5 MIN AWAY BUT SOME OF THE OTHER GUYS MIGHT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GET THERE REAL EARLY.
I DONT MIND THEN EITHER WAY.

WHAT DO THE REST THINK???..........

Re: Devon Meet - Sat 12/02/05 - Main Thread

Because high tide is at 8.45am it makes sense to me that it should start at 7am but just like last time people will turn up at all times.

I use pulley or 1up pennels when I fish there and I rarely lose any rigs to rocks. I also lift the rod tip high and wind in fast. At the last meet I only lost one rig.

Keep the rigs simple and wind in high and fast. You shouldn't have much trouble. Also use breakaway weights. I tend to use 5 or 6oz so once it hits the bottom it stays there. I tighten the line enough for the line to be quite tight without running the risk of the weight moving towards any rocks and snagging.

The rocks are not that big there so you shouldn't have much trouble reeling in over them.

As for Berry Head we have a few people who don't like fishing from hopse nose because of the cardiac hill. Same can be said for Berry Head. The breakwater is flat and can support a hundred or more people. A lot of people use trollys as well now so the breakwater is ideal for them.

For a large meet which can cater for the numbers and everyones level of fitness the breakwater is ideal. We have mini-meets all the time which we can use for other places. Let's make the big meets accessible to all.

Good idea simon,
Just a little tip....when I fish the Break Water I normally use lead lifts, you dont have to buy them, just make them yourself out of an old chinese takeaway container. its real easy.
See pic below

Re: Devon Meet - Sat 12/02/05 - Main Thread

i have fished both berry head and the breakwater for years and i have found that i loose VERY few rigs at both places, the last time i lost a rig was in the middle of the summer and i have been fishing at least once a weekend all year round.
as for the berry head problem, maybe the ranger could be persuaded to open the gates for us becuase it is a relatively large organised meet. all we need is some sort of proof that we are part of the meet like a printable sheet off the forum or it may seem a bit childish but something like a password or some such.
i love fishing from berry head and personally i find it better for bigger fish aswell.

i don't know what do other people think of these ideas?
