Re: Peeler crab video tutorial

Great video - thanks for the link

I can lay my hands on loads of live crabs, but if they're not showing any sign of peeling, will they (at this time of year) begin to peel after a week or two if I store them? If so, does anyone know whether they should be kept in sea water, in the fridge or out etc etc

Thanks!

Re: Peeler crab video tutorial

I keep mine in a bucket with damp sea weed on them , Mind you i only live 80 yds from the beach , I change the sea weed daily or just resoak it in fresh sea water and then put it back in the bucket,
they soon pop

Re: Peeler crab video tutorial

Great. Thanks Nick. Peelers from tackle shops cost a fortune and are often pretty poor, so this year I'm giving it a go myself. I'm 60 miles from the beach though, so I'll need to make sure I remember to take something to put the water in...

Maybe I'll write a post once I've made some progress, to let people know how it works out.

Re: Peeler crab video tutorial

keep shore crabs in a cat litter tray or summit similar from the pound shop and fill one of those spray bottles ( normally used for plants ) with sea water when you collect the crabs and store in the fridge on a base of newspaper, spray the crabs and then cover with more sprayed newspaper..
I used to keep rag and lug in the fridge but eventually had to buy a seperated frige freezer as my bait outweighed the weeks food shop..
On another note Jerry its worth remembering that smoothound and monster wrasse will quite happily munch a green hardback so its all a bit trial and error !

Re: Peeler crab video tutorial

Fortunately Ian, i have my very own bait fridge (with a little freezer compartment) in the lean-to. The missus never looks in it because of the smell, so I can stash illicit beer, expensive bait etc there without fear of a reprimand!

Thanks S&M, I'll keep a few back for the smoothound bash in the summer. Maybe see you there if you can get away from dejaying for the day/night/whatever. Perhaps fire up one of those CD multichangers and sneak out the back door when no one's looking.
