Hi all, I have a weeks holiday booked in Southwold in June. Anyone have any advice where to fish, bait, tackle advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Southwold / Walbeswick

Hey chap, I live about 10 minutes away from Southwold and have asked the same question on another forum. The answer was as follows: For Bass fishing, goto Southwold. When in Southwold head for the harbour and park outside the harbour pub. Walk right, down the pathway and stop when you get to the metal bridge area, fish at this point on the flood tide as the greedy Bass sit here waiting for there tea to come to them. I have not yet tried it but will do this month at some point. I've been told that this spot throws up some big bass each spring/summer. Might be best to take a long-handled net or drop-net if you fish here as I've taken a look and might have problems landing a big fish otherwise. The water swells at this point in the harbour so I guess thats why they sit there. I would try spinning a lure for them with lighter gear I think as you can move up and down the harbour and be more mobile. Fish sunrise or dusk tho as it will get busy down there otherwise, and the fish bite better at this time anyway. Southwold does have a Pier which you can fish, but you may have to be a member, not to sure. You need to ask! If you want to fish during the daytime on a beach, I would take a trip to Orford Island (about 20-25mins from Southwold) ,you need a ferry trip to get over to it so it's pretty much empty. It's the deepest water around the area and only needs a short cast of 45yds to reach the deep. You will find that you can catch anything there and even the odd summer cod turns up. If you are interested I can give you the ferrymans number. The other beaches I would only fish during night due to the amount of general public. Hope this will help you have a good fish mate

Thanks bigfin, great advice, really appreciated. Ive just bought myself a spinning rod so i'll give that a go. I guess it gets quite busy down there so a trip to Orford Island might have to be on the cards. Let me know how you get this month. Cheers Bobsdad :)
