Re: Help Hi welcome to the forum michelle, in beach fishing it depends on what your fishing for. May i ask off you how old is your father in law as beach fishing at retirement age might be a bit tiresome as walking the gear and tackle on the beach can be a task in itself. The gear you need and tackle is the easy bit as im shore fishing over 15 years with heaps off sound advice, and many years off shore fishing at team level ie tips that actually catch fish no rubbish. Going into a tackle shop that you dont know can be a daunting thing to say the least ie you come out with tackle thats useless. Im straight from the hip no corners just good honest advice. Please dont think im being rude. I also do fly fishing and boat as well as shore. Let me now if he would like fly fishing. ![]() ![]()

Re: Help Hi Thanks for the speedy reply. My father in law has already started beach fishing, he lives 5 mins from the sea so beach is for him. He has a basic kit at the mo but wants to get more adventurous with 2 rods, having said this he is very much a beginner. I can't get to any shops so was hoping to get enough info to order something online, so your advice is invaluable. We were hoping to spend around £50-£70 for a rod and reel. As far as I understand there are two main reel types (fixed and multiplier), which do you think would be best for the two rod novice. As far as the rod goes I understand some are better suited to fixed reel and some to multiplier also is it best to pay more for carbon fibre? I am guessing if he gets into it the rod and reel may need to last a while. Lastly any web sites you can recommend would be really good. Thanks again M

Re: Help Em were do i start, £50-70 rod 12-13 foot long will be fine and reel no probs combos, type in google: "fishing tackle" and a world will open to you both. I would recommend fixspool to start with its cheap and cheerful and easy to use. For shore fishing as standard buy 15lb mainline and put on 60lb shockleader about the length of your rod and 6-8 turns on your reel for useing leads up to 6oz and if not used your line will just snap or you might hurt someone, please for safety ask someone to show you the knot or when you buy it come back to me and i will show you the most easy knot to tie and 100% safe. ![]()

Re: Help If you are buying a rod & reel outfit in the £70 bracket, i'd advise getting one that has a fixed spool reel. For this price range you should be able to get a reasonable beginners carbon composite rod & reel. Good casting Multipliers tend to be a lot pricier. You should get a good deal from the companys listed in the previous post by Nick R. __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...

Re: Help Remember leader knot michelle, as he gets more into it the arm comes loose and remember safety first. FOR 2-3oz leads use 30lb shockleader close in fishing gentle lob is fine , but if he wants to go further and puts on a 5-6oz lead and wants to wack it so to speak 60-80lb shockleader a must and a good strong lead link. All you need now is some good traces and good bait to put on the hook. We tip if your not catching, try it at night or just when it gets dark, ive had one rod in and one rod out one night and had to bring one rod and put it away it was mental two rods going crazy and i mean crazy. Get a head lamp i use a tiga and it light up the whole beach well put it this way its bright. Take care.
